As the Mohammed Cartoon protests keep over and swept into most parts of the Muslim world. It’s been touted as the reaction to some Danish political cartoons that depict the Prophet Mohammed.
The Danish newspaper that originally published the cartoons, Jyllands-Posten, apologized for any offense to Islam, but it didn’t apologize for printing them. The Danes and several other European newspapers that reprinted the cartoons in press solidarity stand behind the pillar of “freedom of expression.”
That’s not good enough for a fair number of protesters, though. Many demand an apology from the offending newspapers and their governments. They also request five more boxes of Danish flags to burn. Usually the local flag stores only carry American and Israeli flags, which are just sitting on the shelves now. But these Danish flags are selling like pomegranates.
The fact is that this specific situation will go away eventually, but the problem won’t as caricatures of Mohammad aren’t the real issue.
Actually, there is no historical precedent for the worldwide Muslim protests against Danish cartoons since ancient likenesses of Mohammed are on display in museums.
As reported on UPI, Alan Godlas, who teaches Islamic studies at the University of Georgia, told the Washington Times that Islam has long frowned on depictions of the prophet out of a concern any images of Mohammed or other religious figures could lead to idolatry and detract from worship of Allah.
Yet, depictions of Mohammed are in the collections of such institutions as New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Bibliotheque Nationale de France in Paris and the Edinburgh University library.
Mohammed has also been portrayed in the work of revered Muslim artists and of such Western figures as William Blake, Auguste Rodin and Salvador Dali — and even by the creators of the cable-TV cartoon series “South Park,” none of which prompted such violence, the newspaper said.
So we could say that the reason these cartoons sparked such a reaction has more to do with the tensions that were already there between the Islamic world and the West.
Another report came from French, the French satirical weekly, Charlie-Hebdo republished all of the cartoons, and even added another of its own showing the prophet Mohamed holding his head in his hands and saying, “It’s hard to be loved by fools.â€
Charlie-Hebdo editor Philippe Val wrote, “When extremists extract concessions from democracies on points of principle, either by blackmail or terror, democracies do not have long left.â€
More and more European papers and papers around the world are starting to publish and republish the pictures in an effort to fight for the right to free speech and expression. We really have no choice.
Now, let’s make this all clear now, apparently muslims are concerned that these images of Mohamed cartoon could lead to idolatry. As Webster’s Dictionary defines idolatry as follows: “The worship of a physical object as a god.†And we could accept this, but why they think that the followers of their religion would start to worship these pictures?
Actually the response of some Muslims reflects the true nature of them. And is it violence? No other religion would respond this way. Buddhist statues were destroyed by explosives in Afgannistan during Taliban reign, and no violence come out eventhough most of the Buddhist did not like it. They remain peaceful because the essence of that religion is peaceful. You can see a lot of critisms and attackes on Christianity (for example, Davinci Code) and a lot others, but still the response is peaceful. So, what’s wrong with Islam? Were they taught to be violent? I have a lot of Muslim friends, who are very kind and nice to people.
I could feel the ideology of Islam through them and I don’t think all Muslims are to be blamed for violence. But something is really wrong with Muslims, but not Islam, itself. They should react carefully to reflect the true nature of Islam, which is worshipping the same God as Jewish, and Christians. We are brothers and sisters so why hatred is nursed among Muslims? Probably, they are not the true follower of Prophe Mohammed? Seriously, they are away from Allah or God who created this world and people with love, not by violence.
