Fashion WeekOlympus Fashion Week became history Friday night with the launch of Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld’s New York collection in a downtown ballet studio.
Rosettes were decorative ploys at Vera Wang and Oscar de la Renta. Lagerfeld wrapped and layered clothes and wadded fabric into three-dimensional rolls at the waist.

And Marc Jacobs added frayed edges in a collection that flirted with his 1990 grunge outing.
De la Renta would have you spiff things up with a cashmere crochet bolero.

Meanwhile Ralph Lauren added a belt with a gold link buckle and pleated gold lame skirts with cashmere sweaters. Monique Lhuillier, a red-carpet favorite, offers flared lace jackets and boleros and a jeweled bib to enliven to your look.

What fashion you should know in months to come?

Tights and leggings are the fastest way to make a transition to a fresh new look right now. Opaque tights should still be in stores, but in an emergency, check out exercise clothing lines. The new leggings are said to reflect better stretch technology with a long-lasting shape. On the runway, tights and leggings were popular among designers such as Wolfgang Joop and Ralph Lauren, who paired tights with riding boots and lean jackets in loden and olive green.

Getting a blue mood. Some fashion designers – http://fashion-models.womendiary.net/ call it cadet blue. Color analysts call it “bijou blue.” That’s how Carolina Herrera, Cynthia Steffe and Betsey Johnson dusty hue liked. Turquoise is also back. And navy is a big hit. It’s okay if you pair them with brown.

Pull out your plaids. Ralph Lauren fashioned tartan taffeta evening gowns and three-piece glen plaid suits with sexy tight pants. Kate Spade returned to her roots (she started with plaid lunch-box bags in the `90s) to make plaid handbags, boots and platform shoes.

Layer like crazy. Marc Jacobs used wool sweat shirt-like shapes to top sweaters and T-shirts to go with puffed-up skirts and low-slung balloon pants. Lagerfeld put black on black on black in every garment shape but the bed blanket, suit for celebrities gossip release.

Watch your waist. Raise it. Sash it above the diaphragm. Sling a belt over your hips. Cinch your middle. Or wrap ropes together and tie at the waist. Just don’t ignore it.

Be a lady in lace. The girlish frill is all but gone, but lace keeps things feminine. If you don’t want to invest in a dress, add a bolero or shrug. Or pile sweaters and jackets over a lace skirt with high boots.

Wear gloves. Check out vintage stores for leather gloves of every length. Designers added elbow-length gloves to sleeveless or slip-style cocktail dresses and gowns. Ralph Lauren had models in swingy wool dresses wear over-the-wrist gloves.

Don’t take the look too seriously. Do it with a certain swagger. Have some fun. We are not going back to the polished, every-hair-in-place `50s.

Find your bohemian side. The bell and Juliet sleeves reminiscent of long-haired young women sitting in the grass are on the fast track back.

Think equestrian. Riding boots enjoyed considerable runway attention from several designers. Lauren, who took his runway bow in leather jeans and silver Santa Fe belt, said his collection was inspired by a “shooting party.” (Vice President Dick Cheney apparently took him literally.) Lauren will love it if you wear a horse blanket and jodhpurs with your boots.

Keep wearing boots, especially those that curl up over your knees.

Be chic in suits. Like many companies reaching back to their roots, Dana Buchman moved away from the glitz and glamour of last year and back into pretty suits and jackets for which she is known. Suits were also major at Bill Blass.

Be in the know: If you want to impress in the conversation department, bring up Chanel designer Lagerfeld, who blitzed New York during fashion week to promote the new Lagerfeld New York collection. His involvement with the clothes was somewhat limited. The line, which includes two labels at two price levels, of course, was produced in part by Tommy Hilfiger staff, who owns Lagerfeld’s French company.
But never mind. Lagerfeld was featured in New York magazine and the New York Times. Wearing his signature sunglasses, driving gloves and stiff, high white collar and looking a bit 19th century, he appeared on “The Charlie Rose Show” and at a news conference for the out-of-town press.

If someone mentions Wal-Mart, you can talk about the company’s successful recent entry into trendy fashion with the Metro 7 line. According to trade journal Women’s Wear Daily, demand is exceeding the delivery schedule. It includes bags and wedge sandals. The highest-priced item is a $33 trench coat.

And when conversation turns to the Olympics, you can add that the Olympus Fashion Week is a miniature version of the Olympic village. Designers came from places such as Turkey, Brazil and Japan, and a front-row seat was reserved for a Russian magazine.

And for a fashion reporter, do not only judge a collection by creativity and aesthetic, look at how a designer evolves from one season to the next. At Chado Ralph Rucci, the clothing is couture level in quality and strikingly beautiful. But if the line evolves, it only becomes more luxurious with more sable and more crocodile inset in the jersey dresses.
