Alexandra Pauline Cohen, nicknamed “Sasha Cohen,” an American women figure skater, has been a rising star since the early 2000s; following the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, she’s been a regular contender in international competitions and is currently World Silver Medalist.
At the 2006 Torino Winter Games, Cohen stood in 1st after the short program and leading Russia’s Irina Slutskaya by .03 points. Her high level of difficulty, spins, and artistic scores earned her a large number of points despite these falls. These points, combined with multiple errors by favorite Irina Slutskaya, allowed Cohen to win her first Olympic medal, a silver.
Sasha Cohen was born in Westwood, a neighborhood in Los Angeles, California. Her mother, Galina, is a Ukrainian Jewish immigrant and a former prima ballerina; her father, Roger Cohen, is an American Jewish lawyer. Sasha is the Ukranian nickname for Alexandra, “Sasha” is a common Slavic shortening of Alexander or Alexandra. Rounding out Sasha’s immediate family is her father Roger Cohen and her younger sister Natasha, an aspiring pianist.
A gymnast from an early age, Sasha switched to figure skating when she was seven years old. She is best known for her spiral sequences and layback spins as well as her flexibility and grace on the ice.
Born and raised in sultry southern California, Sasha Cohen spent many thousands of hours from an early age and adolescence in chilly skating rinks training to be a champion figure skater when she was seven years old. She is best known for her spiral sequences and layback spins as well as her flexibility and grace on the ice. By her early teens, Sasha’s hard work and dedication began to pay off, and the late 1990s saw her gain experience in regional competition.
She made her Olympic debut at the 2002 Winter Games, where she placed just off the podium (4th), and gained national attention when she spoke with U.S. President George W. Bush on the phone during the Opening Ceremonies.
Been nominated as the finalist for the 2004 Teen People Award and plays an active role in the design of her own costumes, and following her skating career, she hopes to work as a fashion designer. She has worked with some of the top coaches and choreographers in the sport and after a stint in New York is now back in California with former coach John Nicks.
She also signed with the Wilhelmina Modeling Agency and is involved in several charities and serves as spokesperson for Girls, Inc. and Covenant House. In 2004, through “Solders Angels”, she “adopted” a U.S. soldier who is a specialist in the Army’s Signal Battalion, regularly sending letters, postcards and care packages.
Although Michelle Kwan and Sarah Hughes stole the spotlight during the 2002 Winter Games, Sasha Cohen made her mark as the female skater to watch in the future. With her porcelain doll beauty and her daring skating style, Sasha defines feminine grace on the ice.
Did you know that Sasha’s favorite dinner is Filet Mignon with mushrooms and cream, cooked by her father.
