Natalie Portman Rap and Her V for Vendetta

The “Lazy Sunday” writing team came up with a few more digital shorts (a fake lettuce commercial, a hair-metal song about Chuck Norris), but not until this week did they try their hand at recreating the “Lazy Sunday” thing, this time with a digital short where Chris Parnell interviews Natalie Portman and she goes into this big heated rap about how she’s crazy and likes to fight and stuff.

NBC television network lawyers are seeking to have a Saturday Night Live parody rap video featuring actress Natalie Portman permanently removed from internet outlets that allow users to trade videos. Samberg and Parnell didn’t rap in exaggerated honky voices, and they didn’t make jokes about shooting people; they just rapped to the best of their ability about what sounded like the sort of day they might’ve actually had. It also pretty much works as a rap song. All that goes out the window with the Portman clip; she goes way overboard spouting rap cliches, breaking a bottle over her head and talking about “doing 120 getting head while I’m swerving,” sticking close to the clueless white person’s idea of what mainstream rap sounds like.

Portman performed a profanity-laced rap on Saturday, as she was the host of the long-running variety show. According to Fox News, the video received approximately 438,000 views on YouTube.com prior to being disabled on Monday. It looks like NBC and SNL may be missing marketing opportunities with their aggressive pursuit against these video-swapping outlets.
NBC and Saturday Night Live accomplished a similar feat with “Lazy Sunday,” another rap parody better known as “Chronic-WHAT-cles of Narnia.”
Both videos are available on NBC.com and “Lazy Sunday” is available for a $1.99 download on Apple’s iTunes, a financial justification for banning the video on swapping sites.

For the filmmakers, Portman was an easy choice for the pivotal role of Evey who goes from living a quiet life to entering the revolution. “She’s an amazing actress. … You need to believe the journey that character goes on, and I think Natalie lets you really believe it,” said director James McTeigue. “She’s your guide through the narrative. … It’s really about her presence and her intelligence.”
Expectations are strong for the V for Vendetta film, which is produced by Andy and Larry Wachowski in their first effort since their groundbreaking “Matrix” series closed up shop. “V” opens Friday. She breaks out in a commanding role in this depiction of a woman who resorts to violence to avenge her parents’ deaths and overturn a British totalitarian regime.

Portman said, “I was really excited at the idea of getting into the mind of someone who would use violence and who goes through that transformation,” the 24-year-old told a group of journalists in New York. “I’m so into nonviolence, but then I always wonder, what would drive people who seem like normal, good, smart people to believe that they can commit acts of violence?”

In “V for Vendetta,” the politics are fictional but were inspired by former U.K. Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s regime when the original graphic novel was penned in the 1980s. Portman is about to be the next Hollywood glamour girl to trade the red carpet for an international aid work campaign. The story is fictional, but it may remind some viewers of current events and raises questions about how violence can be used by both governments and those countering what they consider to be injustice. While she initially shied away from questions about politics during a news conference for “V for Vendetta,” Portman ended up giving reporters a lesson on free speech in Iran and spouting facts about global poverty.
