Pregnant women need to be aware of the information they are getting on the internet to glean information about their condition, as it may not be reputable and midwives need better training to be able to handle their questions.
From the research that were being presented to the Royal College of Nursing International Research Conference in York on Tuesday, found that mums-to-be in Northern Ireland are increasingly turning to the internet for that purpose. Midwives are being asked increasingly to assess information pregnant women get from the internet.
The research revealed many midwives do not have the necessary skills to deal with the queries and said training on internet-related issues should form part of midwifery education and the internet appears to affect decisions pregnant women make about their care.
Briege Lagan, a PhD Student/Clinical Midwife Specialist at the University of Ulster said that internet was a popular source for information on a wide range of health-related issues, including pregnancy and childbirth.
“Increasingly, patients want more control over decisions affecting their health and expect instant access to information to support these decisions, there is a proliferation of health sites on the internet, however, anyone can host a website and display health information,” she said.
She also said that this research shows that midwives must be prepared not only to discuss important treatment issues, but also to know what information is available to women on the internet so they can use this knowledge to provide pregnant women with appropriate advice.
The contribution of this pregnancy information research towards developing better practice and higher quality patient care is paramount and it is marvellous that our nurses are becoming leaders in this field.
