Can $250 Jeans Make the Woman?

Blue jeans seem to be the one item of apparel suitable in almost any situation, writes The New York Times. It???s also the garment with the most sex appeal and the one that crosses all age barriers and categories. Although most jeans sold in the U.S. cost under $20, price tags on some high-end brands lend themselves to sticker shock. Once that shock passes, however, the money finds its way from purse the cashier with hardly a look-back.

Premium denims, as they are known in the business, are in great demand of women fashion products. Brands like Seven, Habitual, Rogan (worn by everyone on ???Friends???) and Notify have men and women willingly shelling out anywhere from $75 to $300 a pair.
What ever happened to plain old Levi???s? According to the Times, ???Premium denims are to Levi???s as microbrews are to mass market beers like Budweiser.??? And apparently, savvy women fashion model consumers can spot the difference from a mile away by distinctive stitching, grommet location, or even a tiny label. (Levi???s does make a special edition vintage jean with a tiny capital E on the minute red rear pocket label that makes it desirable!).

???People are in the gym more these days and they want jeans that show that off,??? says Kal Ruttenstein, fashion director for Bloomingdale???s in New York. Somehow ???pricey??? translates into ???flattering.???
