Lingerie has joined the gowns, jewelry and handbags lent or given to actresses by firms eager for the publicity associated with Sunday’s Oscars and other awards shows. But there are potential pitfalls, whether an ill-fitting garment, or ill-mannered observer. If a star wants to turn heads, she has to start with what no one sees — the perfect undergarment to build up the bosom or minimize the backside.
Keira Knightley wore her strawberry blond hair in a loose ponytail, and she had on a one-of-a-kind necklace with emeralds, rubies and diamonds from the 1960s she chose from the Bulgari archives. But I’m not sure what Vera Wang’s concept behind the single-strap was. Anyway the colour worked brilliantly for the holy-freakin-hot British starlet. She proved to be fashion royalty at the Academy Awards. She wore a wine-colored, one-shoulder gown by Vera Wang that hit the right balance between youthful funkiness and movie-star glamour.
The Paris fashion crowd got a taste of the kind of glamour expected to be on show when Hollywood A-listers walk down the red carpet at the Oscar awards. The Italian master of red carpet glamour, Valentino, said he was expecting to see some of his creations adorn the celebrities turning out for the hottest event on the movie calendar.
“The stars, they decide at the last minute, but for sure I have something because I am part of the red carpet,” he told AFP backstage after presenting his women’s ready-to-wear for autumn-winter 2006-07. Four lipstick red, floor-sweeping gowns rounded off his show that also included dressy monochrome skirts and jackets, printed more casual separates and cocktail or evening elegance.
The international fame when Halle Berry accepted her Best Actress Oscar in 2002 in one of his creations, Lebanon’s Elie Saab, was also coy ahead of Oscar night. Imperial Russia inspired his winter 2006 collection of gorgeous sheath and Empire gowns in black, white, red and a hot-blooded rose print on soft, long chiffon.
He worked fur into jackets, boleros and coats in knitted mink and fox, while his look for daytime was lean and sharp, offering fitted wool jackets with bows or mini-flounces.
Amid the array of smart black skirts, a velvet pencil skirt was elegant, while the Lebanese designer used puff-sleeved blouses with musketeer cuffs in chiffon or lace for a more romantic touch.
The other Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillipe looked like a superstar couple she wore a gown with rows of silver beads and he was dressed in a three-piece suit with a black tie. While Felicity Huffman wore a supersexy black gown by Zac Posen with a plunging V neck, keyhole back, sheer panels on the side and pleated bodice and hem.
Jessica Alba may not be Oscar calibre as an actress – but she could be Oscar’s date in bronze Versace, Vera Wang did mustard with her Grey Poupon look was what Michelle Williams was looking for this year. The lipstick, the white face, the bright yeller – she was basically Mrs. Ronald McDonald.
Sandra Bullock left her biker hubby at home to hit the big party with Keanu Reeves, and she did it in blue Angel Sanchez. It’s about the mosquito netting around the chest, though!
The normally superglam Jennifer Garner looked pretty washed out in off, white Michael Kors, and really, if you’re going to spray tan your face, don’t forget the rest of the body. Nice recovery onstage, though, that could have been tragic.
Michelle Williams modeled herself after classic screen sirens, wearing a yellow chiffon gown with tulle pleats surrounding the V neck. With Heath Ledger on her arm in a classic bow-tie tuxedo, down to the white pocketsquare.
