The final 10 “American Idol” contestants tried to tackle their choice of songs from the past six years, which resulted in lots of lackluster performances on Tuesday night’s episode. It makes little bit difficult to predict which contestants will wind up in the bottom three but one can assume Lisa Tucker (who sang “Because of You” by Kelly Clarkson) will be there. She led off the show and it was a very poor performance. The judges say “that’s great, you’re almost as good as a former ‘Idol’ winner right now?” Not quite, even if Clarkson’s no longer such a friend of the program.
There were no memorable performances, and really only silver haired Taylor Hicks, this geriatric pop star hopeful who sang “Trouble” by Ray LaMontagne was impressive. This song will force him to stand and sing in a stationary position rather than racing across the stage like a maniac as he does every other week.
Mandisa (who sang “Wanna Praise You” by Mary, Mary - an obscure gospel song) sang it well, the image was definitely church choir rather than pop stardom. She showed off her powerful voice, but it was nothing out of the ordinary.
Paris Bennett (who sang “Work It Out” by Beyonce) was typical; she was cute, she definitely looked and sounded a lot younger than she has in recent weeks, she hit the right notes, and showed off what kind of performer she wants to be. It was a nice performance, and Bennett is one of the few likely to get a legitimate record deal somewhere regardless of how she fares in this competition. Paris Bennett put on a vibrant performance that showcased her fierce vocals and booty-shaking abilities.
Eliot Yamin (who sang I Don’t Wanna Be by Gavin Degraw) fell into the same category. The judges would REALLY REALLY like America to keep Yamin around despite the fact that he looks nothing close to what Hollywood would cast as an American Idol, is struggling to reveal a compelling personality, and dances like an awkward seventh-grader at the Teen Club Spring Fling.
Even though the arrangement was a little odd, his voice always sounds soothing and is controlled. Like Paris, he forgot to show off his range.
Headliner Chris Daughtry fell flat with his attempt at Creed’s “What If.” It was the first week where Daughtry may find himself on the wrong side of the demographic line, but he has enough fans that it won’t matter. Plus, he’s really good. Since it was his worst effort to date. He’s safe, but has to make better choices.
It looks like Lisa Tucker will be going home because of her inability to stay out of the bottom three in the past. Paris is getting all of the young singer support because she outshines Lisa, and that is Lisa’s main problem.
