Miss America Pageant Crown On Reality TV

“Finding Miss America” is what they’re calling the seven one-hour shows leading up to January’s live pageant. The beauty pageant is to be transformed into a seven-episode reality TV show with input from audiences along the lines of American Idol.
Country Music Television will air the Finding Miss America series in the days leading up to the January 2007 pageant, the network and the Miss America Organization said on Saturday. The show will have an interactive feature, with viewers casting votes for their favorites by phone and at Country Music Television website.
Those votes will determine seven of the 15 finalists competing in the pageant. Judges will choose the rest.
“While we deeply value and honor our organization’s traditions, we believe that this series will only increase viewer interest while showcasing the talents and character of these amazing women,” Art McMaster, president and CEO of the Miss America Organization said in the statement.
Declining viewership moved the 85-year-old pageant from network TV to CMT this year. January’s pageant averaged 3.1 million viewers in its live broadcast, according to Nielsen Media Research. That’s good for cable but far below the 9.8 million who watched ABC’s last live pageant telecast in September 2004. Staged since 1921, the Miss America Pageant was once a ratings powerhouse, drawing a 75 per cent share of the television audience at its peak in 1961.
The series will involve tracking the beauty contestants from state contests through regional competitions and will include personality profiles of the promising entrants. Each episode will focus on a group of contestants as they live together and compete in evening wear, swimwear and talent competitions and in one-on-one interviews with judges. Judges will secretly select eight of the 15 top finalists and viewers will vote via phone and internet in a bid to fill the other top spots.
