After the first face transplant in the world to a France women, Isabelle Dinoire, this time China announced that it has carried out the country’s first face transplant on a man whose face had been disfigured by a bear attack. This is the world’s second face transplant, and the first on a male patient.
Li Guoxing, 30, received a new upper lip, cheek and nose on his face transpalant. The whole procedure came from the same donor. Surgeons worked for 14 hours on the his face. Guoxing was a hunter who suffered a bear attack two years ago, leaving his face severely disfigured. According to hospital sources, this procedure was more complex and intricate than the one carried out on Isabelle Dinoire, in France.
A team led by Doctor Guo Shuzhong, the head of the plastic surgery institute, began the operation Thursday afternoon and completed it successfully 14 hours later on Friday morning, the statement said. A photo of Li after the surgery, displayed on the hospital’s website, showed how he had received new tissue to the middle part of his face, below the eyes and above the mouth.
The Xijing hospital, attached to the No. 4 University of Military Medicine, began looking into face transplants in 2002, and set up a special research unit two years later, the statement said. As the hospital previously experimented by conducting face transplants on animals. In December last year, the doctors succeeded in a face transplant conducted on a rabbit, and subsequently decided to try it on a human.
Face transplants are considered to be among the toughest medical challenges of all. It combines micro-surgery to connect nerves and blood vessels; a high risk of rejection by the recipient’s immune system; and a major psychological challenge to the patient, given that the face is the most individual of organs.
Just like what Isabelle Dinoire got, she was given new lips, chin and nose last November after her face was mauled by her dog while she slept.
