Eva Longoria is every man’s fantasy as former model Gabrielle Solis in Desperate Housewives. Eva makes her movie debut as a career-minded secret service agent in The Sentinel - co-starring and directed by Michael Douglas. But Longoria - as Michael Douglas, her co-star in the new political thriller The Sentinel (opening Friday), will tell you - is far from the delicate diva most folks would peg her as, particularly those 20 million plus-US viewers who tune in every Sunday to watch the goings-on of the Wisteria Lane waif.
“It’s a triangle between Michael, Kiefer and me, but it’s not a love triangle,” Eva explains. “That’s why I chose this movie. It’s the opposite of Gabrielle.”
Her character Jill Marrin is a tough and ambitious young agent who graduated second in her class at the Secret Service Academy and is on her first field posting.
“She’s an eager beaver,” Longaria says. “She wants to learn, totally downplays heer sexuality, has to prove herself twice as much as a man and is determined to be the best she can be. She’s new but not complacent - she thinks outside the box. It’s not about the clothes, the hair and the make-up, the way it is for Gabrielle.”
Jill is one of the boys, which is something that Eva can relate to despite her obvious femininity.
“I felt comfortable amid all the testosterone because I’m a tomboy, I grew up on a ranch and used to go target-shooting with my dad,” she confesses.
Longoria’s tomboy past paid off in this role - retired secret service agent Gerald A Cavis, who worked on the movie, admits she was the best shot among the cas members.
Working opposite the 24 star, she recalls, “I was nervous at first because I thought he’s going to be so serious and boring, but he’s quite funny and he’s a great musician, so he was always playing onset … he told me so much about the business. With everything he’s been through since he was a child with his dad (Donald) to having a hit show like 24, it was really inspirational.”
Speaking of sex, and specifically the shedding of Longoria’s apparel, there is the recent matter of Maxim magazine celebrating its100th issue by constructing a 75-by-110-foot billboard featuring its cover image of Longoria - billed as TV’s Sexiest Earthling.
“I was really honoured when Maxim called and said you know we’re celebrating our 100th issue and we want to honour your cover because it was a popular cover.”
Popular enough to be seen from a satellite since Maxim teamed with Google Earth for the stunt.
“You can see it from space, which makes me feel kind of weird and nervous. If any aliens are passing by, they’ll come looking for me first.”
