At last, actress Katie Holmes, who became engaged last June to actor Tom Cruise, gave birth on Tuesday to the couple’s first child, a baby girl they named Suri, weighed 7 pounds, 7 ounces and measured 20 inches long. The name Suri has its origins in Hebrew, meaning “princess,” or in Persian, meaning “red rose,” the statement said.
“Both mother and daughter are doing well,” Robinson, their spokesman said in a prepared statement. The baby was born in Los Angeles but the exact location was not disclosed.
It’s the first child for Holmes, 27. Cruise, 43, has an adopted daughter and son from his marriage to Nicole Kidman. The birth came as Cruise, 43, is in the midst of a promotional campaign for his upcoming film “Mission: Impossible III,” which is due out in May.

It’s a new study from A U.S. study that shows a widely-used osteoporosis drug Raloxifene can protect postmenopausal women from breast cancer as effectively as long-prescribed breast cancer drug Tamoxifen with fewer side effects. Both Tamoxifen and Raloxifene act like estrogen hormone in some tissues, named as “selective estrogen response modulators” but like an anti-estrogen in others.
By acting like an estrogen in uterus and bloodstream, Tamoxifen is linked to rare but serious side effects, including increased risk of uterine cancers and blood clots. In comparison, Raloxifene, a close chemical relative to Tamoxifen, causes 36 percent fewer uterine cancers and 29 percent fewer blood clots.

The scientific evidence is becoming quite clear: All carbohydrates are not bad and some carbohydrates are actually good. The fact is, if you’re overweight you eating too many calories. Americans eat excessive amounts of processed foods high in all the bad carbohydrates. These are sugar, high-fructose corn syrup, white flour, white rice and alcohol. Processed foods have been stripped of all their important nutritional factors. Because they lack fiber, it’s easy to eat huge quantities of calories without feeling full.
Carbohydrate foods that lack fiber fall high on the glycemic index and often rate a high glycemic load. This means they are absorbed very quickly and rapidly raise blood sugar levels, causing an insulin surge. The surge of insulin may precipitate a rapid drop in blood sugar, increasing hunger and spurring a vicious cycle that causes cravings for more highly processed foods.

Scientists have been studying the impact of dietary fats on the risk of developing cardiovascular disease since the outset of two famous research studies: the Seven Countries Study and the Framingham Study, both begun in the 1950s. With the identification of dietary fats – especially saturated fats and cholesterol from animal products such as meats and full-fat dairy products – as the primary culprits in the elevation of serum cholesterol, the outcome was to create a public health recommendation to reduce the amount of total fat in the diet. As decades passed and research progressed, it became clear that all fats are not created equal.
There is no question that lowering total fats, and saturated fat in particular, lowers blood cholesterol levels. Read more of Good Fats vs Bad Fats (Diet Series II)
