What looks will make you not only cool in the heat, but cool on the street? What about your outfit for your mother’s coworker’s daughter’s wedding? Never fear! Fashion this summer is actually on your side for a change. Still, if you’re the type that wants to look like you just left the department store for the beach, here’s what designers and buyers say is hot this summer.
Although most summery outfits may not seem entirely work friendly, never fear. Pair a knee length tulip skirt (named after the shape of an upside down tulip) with a blouse or camisole and cropped blazer. Then ditch the blazer and swap for less sensible shoes before heading out after work. The tulip skirt makes the most of an hourglass shape and one can generally find them in all sorts of materials, both washable and “dry clean only.†Or if you want to wear a flowing skirt to work in a more business environment, be sure and keep the outfit streamlined by adding simple accessories and not a lot of bulky ones. And, wear a belt!
Metallic shoes, bags and belts are a great way to lighten up your style for spring and summer. They are the perfect companion for your whites and brights and work as well in the day as they do at night. This season, metallic accessories are not quite as shiny as in years past, adding to their versatile and multi-faceted appeal.
Minimal and neutral colors cooled off this summer, and the sobering trend has permeated swimwear too. In fact, it’s not brown that’s been lifted from nature’s palette; it’s the entire spectrum of the natural and the cool.
“It’s very modern, minimalist looking,” said Mariela Rovito, president of Eberjey, a lingerie and swimwear company in Miami whose bikinis are sold locally at Ritz-Carlton hotels and the Miami Beach boutique Caterina Lucci. “For the most part, it’s cool colors and prints in light surf, natural and black,” Rovito said.
I see key female fashion pieces for spring summer as being the shrunken cropped jacket, the fuller bigger longer ‘gypsy’ skirt, cropped trousers or overlong trousers that get rolled or turned up, the empire line dress or top, flat or wedge shoes and masses of tribal style jewellery. One other feature that is likely to develop, but more slowly, is hip and derriere interest in the form of soft bustles and side pockets/panier hips. However there are plenty more looks available and discussed out there
Shorts are also making their appearance as day-to-night friendly again. Shorts that rise an inch above the knee, or shorter, are not office appropriate, but the long ones can be, if you workplace dress code allows. And how stylish would you be wearing your knee-length slender shorts, belted, a crisp white shirt with rolled up sleeves, and some platform espadrilles? Some would argue that only flats work with shorts. Personally I don’t like shorts. so I don’t really care one way or the other, but whatever you do, never wear heels with shorts, unless you work at a club or the shorts are hot pants, in which old school platforms would be much cuter. Save the heels for dressier skirts or dresses.
Mismatched beauties, as Rosa Cha, the Brazilian swimsuit designer with a Miami shop, has long combined different prints in a single suit, rather than sticking with the matchy-matchy formula of yesterday. Now compatriot designer Fabiana Ferreira has produced a mismatched bikini for this summer - and it’s her bestseller this season, said her U.S. distributor, Karen Kramser, based in West Palm Beach, Fla. “It’s done really well,” Kramser said.
The suit has a big floral design with a cream background on the top and a bud print against a black background on the bottom, both with orange crocheted fringes (and just like in ready-to-wear, crochet is another trend unto itself these days).
A true trend is a change, a movement toward a new idea or new or different way of doing things. For example it has been a strong trend in the past decade for women throughout the UK and the world in general to more and more wear trousers for every type of occasion. The actual styled type of trousers they have worn though varied from boot cut to palazzo, to cargo pants to pedal pushers to low rise versions and are better described as fashion fads.
White is always right once Memorial Day comes. This year, white leather shows up much earlier and makes an appropriate statement, especially when combined with black basics. A white leather jacket worn with a black silk t-neck and black trousers, for instance, can lighten you up for spring even if the temperature stays cool. Likewise, white leather trim modernizes last years’ tweeds and large, oversized white leather bags are showing up in every city at every price point form Manhattan to Miami. Save your white shoes for June, July and August but by all means add some signature white leather accents as early as March and April. Called “The Patch,” the bikini sells for about $105. But you don’t need a designer to figure out how to mix it up.
Go through your old suits and come up with some dynamic combos yourself..
