The Dead Sea, The Skin Care Answer
Category : Women Beauty, Women Lifestyle

The Dead Sea has stood the test of time and remains a symbol of history, health and beauty. Alive, evolving, growing old but yet still very much alive! Yes, contrary to what popular belief, the Dead Sea is alive and well! Not only are people still making the pilgrimage to the Dead Sea but many manufacturers are using Dead Sea minerals in today’s skin care products.

The Dead Sea lies at the lowest point on earth, 1,320 feet below sea level. One of the most unique things about the Dead Sea is that the water doesn’t drain. Over 7 million tons of water evaporate daily but the salt and minerals remain. This makes the Dead Sea’s salt content range from 26% to 35%. It’s ten times saltier than the world’s oceans and twice as saline as the Great Salt Lake in Utah. The Dead Sea is one of the most amazing places in the world. At first sight, it’s absolutely breathtaking! The water is clear, blue and peaceful. The Dead Sea is often called the “World’s Biggest Natural Spa.”

I saw the Dead Sea for the first time on a cold April day. When I left Amman, Jordan that morning it had been a sunny but cold day. As we drove on the highway leading to the Dead Sea the wind blew and a light rain sprinkled the car. Although I had come prepared to get in the water I really had no hope of actually getting in because of the weather. I came prepared for all possibilities because I had read that no matter what the weather is in the area, the weather at the Dead Sea is always nice. To be honest I didn’t believe that claim and felt this was my opportunity to find out the truth. You see I’m one of those” show me” people.
Well as fate would have it, when we arrived several miles from the Dead Sea all of a sudden the weather changed. It was like I was Dorothy and I went through the “Looking Glass”! The sun was bright and shining and the sky was clear and would you believe the air was hot? When we arrived at the Dead Sea area we drove for what seemed like miles along the shore line passing many hotels and spas along the way.
Finally, we drove into a place called Amman Beach. This beach is designed like a tropical Island with showers, restaurants and other conveniences. After walking through entrance of the beach I found myself standing on the shore of the Dead Sea. The sun was shining brightly and the reflection on the water created a sea of sparkling lights. I was surprised at how clearly I could see the shores of Israel, the cities and the people. Watching that sight I understood why the Dead Sea is often referred to as “The Sea Of Tranquility”. I was a little apprehensive about actually getting in the Dead Sea because of the high salt content.

All I could think about was those times as a child where we would spend a fun day at the beach in Los Angeles. We would play in the water without a care in the world. Then all too soon the day would be over and we had to face that ride home with the dry salty skin. The Dead Sea just looked so inviting and I remembered the nice showers I had seen on the way into the beach. So I put all fears aside and took that first step into the Dead Sea. Oh, what a pleasant surprise! It was like stepping into a warm bath tub filled with moisturizer. The water was very salty but yet the water itself felt silky to the skin. Because of the high salt content your body floats on top of the water. You don’t have to worry about swimming or drowning, it’s like you are floating on air.

The water, the mud and even the air is amazing at the Dead Sea. Did you know that at the Dead Sea there is a high atmospheric density and pressure that makes the air have high levels of oxygen? Yes, even the air is fantastic! It’s said that the sun and the air at the Dead Sea have healing powers. The temperature at the Dead Sea is high all year round causing a constant evaporation of the Dead Sea and creating a haze that infuses the air with bromine, magnesium and other minerals. The Dead Sea contains 26 minerals. which are key to alleviating symptoms and improving health. They key minerals are :

Calcium: Clarifies the skin’s surface and relieves pain.
Sodium: Balances the skin pH.
Chlorine: A natural antiseptic that boosts the skin’s protective layer and reduces swelling.
Magnesium: Enhances functioning of the skin metabolism, facilitates breathing and protects against allergies.
Bromine: A muscle relaxant
Potassium: Regulates the body’s water balance
Iodine: Improves thyroid health and cell metabolism
Sulphur: Detoxifies and stimulates the metabolism

Dead Sea therapy is so highly regarded that Insurance companies in some European countries cover long stays at the Dead Sea spas and treatment facilities. Dead Sea treatments are used to alleviate a wide range of chronic conditions such as asthma, arthritis, psoriasis, hypertension. Let’s not forget how important the Dead Sea is to enhancing beauty. Cleopatra was one of the first to recognize the power of the Dead Sea in beauty and skin care. She convinced Mark Antony to capture the region and make a gift of it to her.
She then built the first Dead Sea cosmetic factories in the area. Cleopatra learned that the mud is wonderful for enhancing the beauty of the skin, hair and face. The Dead Sea salt is a great conditioner for the hair and skin. It also can be used to tighten the skin and help with weight loss. It may not be feasible for everyone to make that pilgrimage to the Dead Sea but you can try some of the Dead Sea products now on the market.
There are Scented or plain Dead Sea Salts, Body Mud, Facial Mud Mask, Skin Tightening Mud, Body Lotion, Facial Creams and many other products. Dead Sea products have been a tremendous help to people suffering from eczema, skin cysts, cellulite, liver spots, cracked heels, acne and a variety of skin ailments.

So if you can’t come to the Dead Sea, bring the Dead Sea home with you. Now if you decide that want to come and take that swim in the Dead Sea, I’m always available for a day in the sun. I now live and work 45 minutes from the Dead Sea. Anytime anyone even whispers about going to the Dead Sea I jump in the car like a small child and I’m ready to go! When my body needs a cure, when my soul needs a hug and when my mind meeds a rest, I’m off to the Dead Sea! Now that’s quite a change considering I was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. But that my friends, I will save for another story.
