All across America this weekend, mothers can look forward to bouquets of flowers, boxes of candy and singing greeting cards. But to show his mom Margarita how much he cares, Felipe Braunthal decided to splurge more than $6,000 — on himself. He spent the money to have a giant spider tattoo on his back lasered off at a dermatology clinic. The 26-year-old insurance agent says it will make his mom happy: “She never liked it.” Now that he’s older, says Mr. Braunthal, “neither do I.”
From Yankee Stadium in New York to AT&T Park in San Francisco, it was a day to think pink around Major League Baseball. Several Yankees, Mets and other major leaguers will be using pink Louisville Slugger bats today with their moms’ name on the label as part of a Mother’s Day program designed to raise awareness for breast cancer. The bats will be autographed and auctioned with the proceeds going to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
Major League Baseball’s decision to raise awareness of breast cancer on Mother’s Day is particularly meaningful to the Mets reliever. His mother Hazel was diagnosed with breast cancer during spring training. She twice had surgeries during a two-week span to remove a tumor.
Meanwhile, several women of the peace activist group Women in Black ( wore black) held a funeral procession this Mother’s Day through Zilker Park and back up Lamar in protest of the war in Iraq. Several women are mothers of fallen soldiers and their legacy runs deep, they began protests in memory of soldiers who died during the Civil War.
Beth Lerman, a military mom, said the roots of Mother’s Day go back to suffragettes who called for peace in the 1870s. About 100 protesters are camped outside the White House as part of a 24-hour peace vigil, including high-profile anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan.
Mother’s day surprise; a missing daughter found after 30 years. A woman who authorities say was kidnapped from Michigan as a child by her father 30 years ago has been found living in Arizona, her mother and sheriff’s officials said. On Mother’s Day weekend in 1976, Laura Gooder’s estranged husband Eric Douglas Nielsen picked up 21-month-old Genevieve Rachel Nielsen at her Oakland County home for an overnight visit. They never returned.
This Mother’s Day weekend, a police officer arrived Saturday at Gooder’s current home in Frederic with news that her daughter — now 31 years old — had been found, as reported by The Detroit News on its Web site.
