Britney’s Baby Safety Questioned
Paparazzi have caught Britney Spears doing something else with her baby that’s upsetting people, again. She is at the centre of another row over the safety of her son – after allegedly flouting baby car-seat rules again.
Front-page photos in both the New York Post and Daily News show Spears driving her convertible Mini-Cooper with her eight-month-old son Sean Preston in the back, sitting in a baby seat facing frontward. Child safety advocates prefer that kids less than a year old sit in car seats facing backward. California officials say Spears won’t be cited.
It has sparked fears the eight-month-old tot was not properly strapped into his chair. An onlooker told Britain’s Daily Mirror newspaper: “He didn’t look properly strapped in at all. There certainly didn’t appear to be any restraints on his shoulders.”
Pat Bentley, of UK charity Roadpeace, said: “The child does not seem to be secured properly. “There should be straps across the shoulders – but the way his shoulder is slumped forward, it appears there are no such straps.”
The photos ??? in which Spears also sports hair curlers ??? have sparked debate over whether the singer violated the California vehicle code. The code states that child safety-seats must be properly installed according to federal safety guidelines which recommend that babies up to a year old and up to 20 pounds ride in them in the back seat facing backward, Marshall said.
In February, authorities visited Spears’ home after photos showed her driving in a car with the baby on her lap, rather than in a safety seat as required by law. Spears later apologized, saying she held the boy because of an encounter with paparazzi. Spokesman Mike Marando of the California Office of Traffic Safety said Spears, if anything, was “breaking the spirit of the intent of the law, which is keeping the child alive.”
Spears and husband Kevin Federline were cleared by California child welfare authorities of any wrongdoing after Sean Preston suffered a head injury by falling from his high chair last month.
Meanwhile, the singer – who recently announced she was expecting her second baby with husband Kevin Federline – has denounced Kabbalah. Britney, who was introduced to the mystical religion by pop diva Madonna, has written a note on her website, britneyspears.com, saying her son is her new faith. It reads: “I no longer study Kaballah, my baby is my religion.”
