The Italian designer Giorgio Armani is to appear at London Fashion Week for the first time this September to show his spring/summer 2007 Emporio Armani women’s wear collection. Giorgio Armani will stage an unprecedented multi-collection runway show during the Fashion Week in a joint effort with Red, the Bono-led African AIDS initiative.
In a move that is bound to give London serious star power next season, the Italian super designer will put on a unique fashion and music event that will also herald the launch of his new RED capsule collection ??? created as part of the pioneering charity initiative set up by Bono and Bobby Shriver last December. The core of the show will be Armani’s spring summer 2007 Emporio collection, which will skip the Milan season.
Emporio Armani is one of the five brands participating in the Red economic initiative launched by the rock star Bono and Bobby Shriver – nephew of the late President John F Kennedy – at the Davos World Economic Forum in December.
“It will be an honor and a privilege to present my Emporio Armani collection at London Fashion Week and at the same time create further momentum for Bono and Bobby Shriver’s RED initiative,” said Armani, whose RED products will include clothing, accessories, eyewear, watches, jewelry and fragrances.
The event is expected to take place on September 21 2006 and will be recorded for a later television broadcast. The event will also mark the re-opening of London’s iconic Emporio Armani store and cafe on London’s Brompton Road, first opened in 1988 and currently closed for refurbishment.
“I am delighted to welcome Mr Armani and his show to London,” said Hilary Riva, chief executive of the British Fashion Council. “This city is the most innovative and inclusive of the world’s fashion capitals, so it is appropriate that Emporio Armani RED should be launched here.
Mr Armani get excited, “London is in many ways the world’s most cosmopolitan and influential city as it has become a crossroads for so many of today’s cultural references including contemporary art, architecture, the performing arts, literature, food, music, film and fashion.”
Meanwhile, top designer Narciso Rodriguez has said that he doesn???t know anything about the rumours that he may one day work at Giorgio Armani. Rodriguez said that he had the outmost respect for the legendary designer. On a four-day flying visit to London last week to present a select few pieces of his autumn/winter 2006-7 collection in Harrods, Rodriguez was more than happy to be here. “I’ve been to Claridges and the Berkeley, which I love, and I wanted to do all the real classic London things: I went for a walk and for lunch around Portobello, I went to the V&A, then the Tate Modern, which I think is a must-see, it’s incredible,”Rodriguez said.
He also said that he had been busy developing his woman??? label for the past ten years and added:” I launched menswear last year and I love working on accessories too- that is a lot of work- I???m happy with it.”
