Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are celebrating the arrival of their daughter, who was born on Saturday in Namibia, Africa. The couple have named the child Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt, which means ‘His Gift’ in Hebrew.
”The night of May 27, 2006 in Namibia, Africa, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt welcomed their daughter Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt. No further information is being given,” as Television program Entertainment Tonight said Hollywood publicist Cindy Guagenti issued the statement on the subject. No photographs were being released, she added.
Shiloh is a name of Hebrew origin meaning, “His gift,” per thinkbabynames.com. It also associated with an 1862 Civil War battle, and a Neil Diamond song about a desperately lonely childhood. (Diamond’s imaginary friend, however, spelled his name “Shilo.”)
The baby’s arrival had been the subject of intense press speculation in recent months, prompting the superstar couple to decamp to Africa for privacy. It escalated Tuesday when an e-mail Pitt sent to the Cannes Film Festival said he was unable to attend because of the baby’s ”imminent arrival.” Last week Brad sent a message to fans about the “imminent arrival” of the new baby.
“With the imminent arrival of the newest addition to our family, I’m unable to join Alejandro (Gonzalez Innaritu), Cate (Blanchett) and Gael Garcia Bernal and the rest of the cast and crew in introducing the film,” the statement read.
The new parents, along with kids Maddox and Zahara have been staying at a luxury resort in Namibia since April, where their personal security team and Namibian police have shielded them from paparazzi, the report said. They have been holed up in a sealed off beach resort in the tiny village of Langstrand and it was unclear if the child had been delivered there or at one of the private hospitals in the nearby towns of Walvis Bay and Swakopmund.
Last week, the Namibian government said foreign journalists wishing to cover the birth must have written permission from Pitt and Jolie to enter the country and obtain a work permit, People reported.
“We are delighted and honoured that they chose Namibia,” said Nuuyoma, governor for the Erongo region, one of Namibia’s 13 regions. “We are happy all went well.” There was speculation that Jolie had opted to have a water birth at the private Welwitschia hospital near Swakopmund, but staff at the clinic were tight-lipped on Sunday.
The National Society of Human Rights, has accused local police and bodyguards of resorting to “heavy-handed tactics”, including door-to-door searches of the homes of local residents, to keep the paparazzi at bay.
