Another troubling case has been reported involving a teenager and MySpace.com. Katherine Lester, 16-year-old Michigan girl who officials say tricked her parents into getting her a passport and then flew off to the Mideast to be with a West Bank man she met on MySpace headed for home yesterday. U.S. officials in Jordan persuaded her to turn around and go home before she reached the West Bank.
Katherine, was last seen around home on Monday — before she got into a cab with enough clothes for two weeks, a birth certificate and a passport authorities say she snookered her mom into getting for her. Her family thought she was planning a trip to Canada with a few friends, but as early as Monday, Lester’s sister Mary suspected something was up.
The FBI traced the teenager to a Wednesday flight from New York’s Kennedy Airport to Tel Aviv. At a scheduled stop in Amman, Jordan, U.S. officials persuaded her to return home, the FBI said. When agents found her, the 16-year-old was on her way to meet a 25-year-old man in Jericho, on the West Bank, authorities said. Or so that’s what the man claimed to be when they met about three months ago via her page on MySpace, a hugely popular Internet social site.
On Thursday night, her family received word from U.S. officials that she had been stopped as she arrived in Amman, Jordan, en route to Tel Aviv, Israel, said her mother, Shawn Lester.
“A woman from the U.S. government called and said they had detained her in Amman,” she said. “I asked if she was all right, but all the woman knew was that she was detained.”
Shawn Lester told The Saginaw News that her daughter has “never given me a day’s trouble. … I just don’t understand with all these new laws protecting America how a 16-year-old kid could get out of the country.†She said her daughter never had a boyfriend and seemed to be content with that. State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said he could say little about the girl because of privacy rules. Their step mom did some searching of Lester’s profile on the Web site MySpace, discovered she had a friend in Israel, and the next thing you know, the FBI tracked her down on that plane to Jordan.
Katherine and her mother live in Gilford, a village about 80 miles north of Detroit in Michigan’s agricultural Thumb region. Her father lives in Grand Blanc Township. The girl is now on her way back to the United States, and the FBI has opened an investigation into the case and confiscated the teen’s home computer.
MySpace.com is a social networking Web site with more than 72 million members that lets users post photos, blogs and journals, and the page can be pimped too There have been scattered accounts of sexual predators targeting minors they met through the site. MySpace forbids youngsters 13 and under from joining and provides special protections for those 14 and 15–only people on their list of friends can view their profiles. Older users also have the option of restricting certain personal data so it can be seen only by people they have identified as friends.
