For many families, Easter marks a cherished time to gather and celebrate time-honored spring traditions, including gift giving. While candy-laden Easter baskets are fun to make and receive, these good-les seldom are consumed in moderation and can present a challenge to those practicing a healthy lifestyle or modeling good eating behaviors for their children.
The experts at Weight Watchers International, Inc., recommend that instead of the traditional calorie-laden holiday baskets, take this opportunity to shower your loved ones with creative and thoughtful gifts. “A basketful of seeds and gardening tools can provide a loved one with all that’s needed to start a vegetable garden,” says Maria Walls, Senior Nutritionist at Weight Watchers International, Inc. “Enjoy the fruits and nutritional benefits of your labor through-out the summer and into the fall.”
Weight Watchers offers the following tips to create fun, easy, and nutritious spring holiday gift baskets that will support a healthy lifestyle for every member of your family:
For the little tykes: A healthy holiday gift basket doesn’t necessary mean eliminating all of the sweets that youngsters love. Instead, intermingle candy and chocolates with fresh fruits, nuts, and raisins. In addition, consider including a jump rope, baseball, or other toy to motivate your child to get outdoors and enjoy the warm spring weather.
For the man in your life: Holiday gift baskets can be enjoyed by adults as well as children. For your father, husband, or brother, in addition to a selection of fruits, you may want to include fine coffees or teas in their basket. Low in calories, decaffeinated coffee and tea warm you up on early spring mornings. In addition, you could add a pedometer or another exercise gadget to add some fun to his workout. If he’s a gardener, put together a basket full of vegetable seeds, complete with gardening gloves.
For your mother, wife or sister: A perfect alternative is a spa gift basket. Filled with soothing teas, bath oils, nutritious seasonal fruit, and aromatic candles, this gift can be a relaxing respite for a busy woman. Adding a lucky bamboo or another potted plant also can be a wonderful addition to any basket.
For the new couple: Spring is a time for weddings, and a gift basket can be a way to show you care. For the newlyweds, include a bottle of bubbly and add a picture frame and champagne glasses as mementos they will always cherish.
