Nicole Kidman, the Hollywood actress, delighted fans yesterday when she married Keith Urban, the country music star, in a low key candlelit ceremony and fairytale ceremony at a clifftop chapel in her home town of Sydney attended by close family and a smattering of A-list stars. Among the 230 official guests were the film stars Russell Crowe, Hugh Jackman, Baz Luhrmann and Naomi Watts and the director Philip Noyce.
Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban opted for a traditional Roman Catholic wedding ceremony on a clear Sydney winter evening. It may have been lavish but, compared with the hysteria that surrounded Kidman’s previous relationship, with Tom Cruise, it was positively low key. That marriage was performed by the Church of Scientology, to which Cruise still belongs, and thus it was not recognised by the Catholic Church.
Veiled and wearing an ivory gown designed by Nicolas Ghesquiere for Balenciaga, Kidman was every bit the princess bride as thousands of well-wishers lined the streets. She exchanged vows with Urban in a traditional Catholic ceremony at the Gothic-style Cardinal Cerretti Memorial Chapel at St Patrick’s Estate, Manly.
Her cream Rolls-Royce limousine drove from her waterfront mansion across the iconic Sydney Harbor Bridge, through streets lined with cheering fans.
The wedding attracted huge attention, with up to 1,000 media and fans yesterday lining the streets to the estate. Helicopters buzzed over the gothic-style church full of media hoping to snap an exclusive photograph that could be worth a fortune in gossipy magazine sales.
It had been hailed as Australia’s celebrity wedding of the year and it clearly lived up to expectations. Details of the ceremony closely guarded, and no general media coverage was allowed, but the couple later released a photograph of the wedding, Kidman in her flowing white gown and Urban in a black suit and tie with a white rose in his lapel.
They said in a brief statement: “We just want to thank everyone in Australia and around the world who have sent us their warm wishes.”
Russell Crowe said today the evening was beautiful. “It was sensational, it was so beautiful, I felt privileged to be there,” she said. “I thought Nicole looked absolutely stunning. She looked ethereal.”
She said Urban, 38, had surprised the guests by singing Memories of Us to his bride, who is a year older. “Everyone was sitting round at their tables and he just walked up onto the stage unannounced and pulled out his guitar and sang this beautiful song. “I don’t think there was a dry eye in the house. She cried, everyone cried.”
One guest later told the US-based People magazine: “Nicole cried all the way to the church in the car and then she cried all during the ceremony and had to wipe her eyes under the veil.
“It was the most emotional and beautiful ceremony. Nicole looked ethereal with her veil floating, like a vision in white . . . Keith cried when he looked at her. When her veil was lifted, Keith moved right in and he grabbed her and kissed her. It was a long, passionate kiss.
“Then everything went from being quiet and elegant and intense to really loud, like we were suddenly at a soccer game. There was screaming and hollering and such excitement.â€
After the reception, the couple returned to their harbourside apartment. They are expected to fly out to Fiji or the south Pacific island of Bora Bora for their honeymoon today.
