Fans in search of Jessica Simpson’s new summer smash “A Public Affair” can now purchase the song in a completely personalized version. This is the first time music fans have been offered the innovative opportunity to put their own name into a customized pop song so that the lyrics are literally calling out their name.
There is a list of 500 names for fans to choose from, once they choose their name the song will be able to immediately downloaded, containing three personalized shout outs. If the person has a unique name that is not on the list, their song will be delivered in approximately 1-3 weeks, CBS reported Friday.
The idea, dubbed Custom Cuts, was created by Epic Records and will be up and running exclusively at Yahoo! Music starting July 18th and then at JessicaSimpson.com and through Yahoo Music starting next Tuesday. Fans can also enter a contest to win a customized download of the single. A label spokesperson says the label was looking for other creative ways to work with Yahoo!, following the success it had with the Shakira ‘Make Your Own Fan Video’ contest. During brainstorming sessions, label executives were searching for concepts that had not been done before. Custom Cuts was born.
The pop singer, actress, former reality-show star, and ex of Nick Lachey said, after making their choice from a list of 500 comman names, fans will be able to immediately download a song that contains three personalized shout outs. However, if the person’s name is very unique, songs will be delivered in approximately 1-3 weeks.
The star-studded video for “A Public Affair” directed by Brett Ratner for the single is out on July 19 and features Simpson’s pals Eva Longoria, Christina Milian and Christina Applegate making fun of themselves for being famous. “There’s a real funny dream sequence where Christina Milian and I are licking Andy Dick’s face,” Simpson told OK! magazine.
Simpson’s fifth album, also titled “A Public Affair,” is slated for release and hits stores on Aug. 29.
A sample of the customized cut can be heard on Simpson’s MySpace page. The sample uses the name Tom — no doubt named for default MySpace friend and the site’s founder Tom Anderson. The personalized song contains the lyrics “Hey Tom, I see you looking over here…Tom are you gonna keep looking or get up and talk to me?”
Epic is likely hoping to boost the profile of “A Public Affair,” which has been stuck in the bottom end of the Billboard Top 40 since its release two weeks ago. The song also has taken quite a bit of heat for its sonic resemblance to the ’80s-era Madonna hit “Holiday.”
As previously reported, Simpson is scheduled to co-host the Teen Choice Awards on Aug 20. She’s also a nominee, as is her ex-husband Nick Lachey and his current flame, television personality Vanessa Minillo.
