Diane Von Furstenberg was named President of the Council of Fashion Designers of America after a long-winded selection process that saw fellow designer Joseph Abboud take second place in the race to take over the role held by Stan Herman for the last 15 years. She told that she was thrilled with the appointment and wanted to create a network service system for the fashion business, â€The most important thing – and I would like this to be my legacy – is to really create an incredible network service system. I would like to go to the mayor and see what he can do for us. Our mayor appreciates that the fashion business is a huge business, and I would like to see what we can do together.â€
The 59-year-old new president, who will serve a two-year term after the bylaws of the organisation changed last year, said that she hoped to transform it “so that people who are members of the CFDA are proud to be members”.
After the announcement, Von Furstenberg was whisked to the CFDA’s Broadway headquarters in her green Bentley to make her inaugural speech. “I want to really work on all the benefits this membership gives,” she said. Von Furstenberg’s other major ambition is to improve network relations between the world’s major fashion cities. “I know both Didier Grumbach [president of the Chambre Syndicale in Paris] and Mario Boselli [Grumbach's counterpart in Milan], and I want them to respect us, and I think we will be the best of all the organisations and they will look up to us.”
