Miss Universe 2006 Pageant will be held in Los Angeles, CA on Sunday, July 23 and watched in some 170 countries, on its 55th year. The representatives from dozens of countries all around the globe are competing to win the coveted crown have gathered in Los Angeles for the Miss Universe contest and the prestigious 800 diamond Mikimoto winners’ crown valued at $US250,000 ($333,000). The winner will spend her reign as Miss Universe traveling the globe speaking out on humanitarian, health and other issues.
This is the first time since 1998 that the pageant has been held in the United States, and the second time that it has been held in Los Angeles, having previously been held there in 1990.
Contestants from nations ranging from Albania to Zambia compete in traditional categories such as evening gowns and swimsuits. But they also answer questions that give insight into their personality and public speaking ability.
Changes to the pageant have been announced, pageant website Global Beauties reports that this year will see 20 semifinalists instead of the usual 15 - which is great news not only for the delegates but for us because we get to see more girls strut their stuff on pageant night.
The top 20 finalists for Sunday’s live two-hour telecast, which airs in the United States on NBC stations, were chosen in a preliminary round of the competition on Tuesday night. Most of the contestants have already been booted from the competition, although the names are a closely guarded secret and will not be revealed until Sunday’s show.
Natalie Glebova of Canada will crown her successor at the conclusion of the 2-hour show. Her reign marks as the longest ever in Miss Universe history. On July 23, 2006, Glebova would have been on the job for about one year and two months, she was crowned on May 31, 2005 in Bangkok, Thailand.
Three delegates have previously competed in the Miss World pageant. Trinidad and Tobago’s Kenisha Thom represented her nation at Miss World 2004, and placed in the top 15. St. Lucia’s Sascha Andrew-Rose also represented her nation at Miss World 2004, but failed to place. Lauriane Gilliéron of Switzerland and Tatiana Silva Braga Tavares of Belgium both competed at Miss World 2005 but failed to place.
