That’s it, Australia’s Erin McNaught has been eliminated from the 2006 Miss Universe pageant which began in Los Angeles this morning. Pageant officials announced the top 20 at the show’s opening and McNaught was not one of the contestants selected. Her elimination is a huge shock, as McNaught was a favourite with bookmakers heading into the competition. McNaught was thought a certainty to make it into the top 20 as Miss Universe pageant owner Donald Trump selected five of the 20.
She joined Trump in New York last week as a guest on the Late Show with David Letterman, a privilege given to just four of the entrants. The Australian entered the competition in a media storm after topless photos were published of her in Australian magazine, Zoo Weekly, last month.
Miss USA Tara Conner and 19 other hopefuls made the first cut Sunday night in their bids to reign as Miss Universe 2006. Other candidates who made the top 20 were from Puerto Rico, Denmark, Switzerland, Colombia, Ethiopia, Russia, Canada, Japan, Brazil, Sweden, Trinidad & Tobago, Thailand, Bolivia, Hungary, Paraguay, India, Argentina, Ukraine and Mexico.
Conner was vying to become the first American winner since Brook Lee in 1997. The Kentucky native wore a red-white-and-blue jockey outfit and cracked a whip during the opening parade of nations.
The Miss Universe winner is expected to be crowned at about 1pm
