Nadine Chandrawinata, Indonesia’s Miss Universe contestant, who failed to win a title, may face indecency charges after a hardline militant Islamic group reported her to the police, a lawyer for the organization said on Tuesday. The women’s chapter of the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) reported Miss Indonesia, Nadine Chandrawinata, to the Jakarta police over her appearance at the pageant and display of her body in a swimsuit there “is actually insulting for Indonesian dignity and women,” said Sugito, who heads the front’s legal counsel.
“We are reporting her and several others involved in her participation in the Miss Universe pageant, for intentionally and openly engaging in indecency,” Sugito said, adding that lawyers for the group filed the complaint on Friday.
Nadine Chandrawinata did not make it to the finals of the Sunday competition in Los Angeles, which was won by Miss Puerto Rico but she had drawn heavy media coverage in Indonesia, partly because of her mixed Indonesian-German parentage and Eurasian looks (?).
“Her vulgar appearance at Miss Universe is an insult to Indonesian women,” he said, adding that beauty pageants run counter to the culture of Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslim nation.
The group’s lawyer Sugito, who uses only one name, said Ms Chandrawinata “intentionally and openly engaged in indecency” before she was eliminated after the contest’s first round.
The Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) also accused Chandrawinata and the others of together, in an organised way, violating a prevailing regulation.
On Friday a different lawyer for the group, Adnan Assegaf, proclaimed that they had ratted the young woman out to the cops. “We have reported Nadine Chandrawinata as she has harassed Indonesian women by appearing in vulgar poses at the Miss Universe 2006 contest on behalf of Indonesia,” Assegaf said.
“We, at the FPI, are concerned. If the law is not respected, what will happen to the country?” the lawyer said. A government decree against participation in beauty contests issued when strongman Suharto was president is still technically in effect in Indonesia, although in practice it has been disregarded since he lost power in 1998.
With 85 per cent of Indonesia’s 220 million people follow Islam, making it the world’s most populous Muslim country. Although most Indonesian Muslims are considered relatively moderate and the Government is officially secular, hardline groups are becoming increasingly vocal and visible.
Under Indonesian law, police would have to investigate whether there was sufficient evidence for a case under the complaint, and if so, turn their findings over to prosecutors for a decision on whether the case will be taken to court and carry potential sentences ranging from two to six years in jail.
