Most people would call it a clear out. But for Cher, the 60-year-old singer, it is “rewriting her personal environment” as she yesterday revealed plans for a two-day auction of her paintings, furniture, jewellery and costumes. Want to sleep in Cher’s bed? Or get into her clothes? You’re in luck ??? the singer is selling off some 700 objects from hers that will be auctioned from 3 Oct.
She said: “I am beginning a new chapter in my career and have decided to rewrite my personal environment, my home.” She will sell some of her professional and personal wardrobe at Sotheby’s and Julien’s auction houses.
Cher told the Associated Press that a “nice percentage” would go to charity. She said she was “only keeping about five items” from the home.
Cher insists she is ready to let many of her treasures go, as she is desperate to revamp her plush Malibu, California, home. The Cher Charitable Foundation will benefit from the proceeds.
The auction is expected to bring in more than $1 million, said Lee Dunbar of Sotheby’s, one of two firms administering the auction.
One of those costumes is a black gown with multicoloured stones and embroidered dots she wore in 1974 (??1,600-??2,600) on ‘The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour’ TV show. Also several dresses by the American designer and Cher’s long-time favourite Bob Mackie, include Mackie’s dress for the 1998 Oscars ceremony (??2,100-??3,200).
Among the items expected on sale are a Gothic revival brass bed, made in about 1865, outfits Cher wore on The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour in the 1970s, and a Bob Mackie gown that she wore to the Academy Awards. The Gothic revival brass bed is joined by a items like a terra-cotta Jesus Christ figurine from the 16th century and 85 jewellery items, including pieces Cher made herself.
“I’m truly excited about it, having had this stuff for so many years,” she said. “The amount of costumes I have is staggering, so this doesn’t even make a dent.”
Items from the statuesque I Got You Babe star’s collection include neo-Gothic art and furniture and a 16th-century terra-cotta figurine of Jesus Christ, as well as outfits featured on The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour in the 1960s.
The full exhibition of items begins on September 29 at the Beverly Hilton hotel, prior to which selected items will be displayed at Sotherby’s in New York, London and Chicago.
