J.K. Rowling said two months ago that two characters would be killed off. Rowling even hinted that it could be the end of Harry Potter himself, but will it be Harry himself? J.K. Rowling was in the United States for the first time since 2000 to take part in an authors’ reading for charity.
Current odds on his death are 2/1. . Rowling did give a hint that seems ambiguous, but may prove to be a ???potter??? of gold for aficionados. She said the two characters killed are ones she ???did not intend to die.??? If you know what that means, bet it.
Harry Potter has become much more than a boy wizard ??? he has become a king of pop culture. Age, sex, religion and language have no importance when it comes to the Potter Empire, and fans are placing their bets now on whether their beloved Harry will be destined for death in the final novel.
Rowling showing up in a tasteful black dress and ornate high heels for her first U.S. appearance in six years, at Radio City Music Hall. The Tuesday night event, a benefit called “An Evening With Harry, Carrie & Garp,” co-starred Stephen King and John Irving. At a news conference earlier in the day, King joked that he and Irving were just an opening act. That might have overstated it a bit, but there was no doubt who was the star of this show.
Not surprisingly, Rowling cast a spell on a 6,000-strong audience and stole the show from King and Irving, both of who begged her to reconsider her implied decision to kill off Harry Potter. Asking Rowling not to go Arthur Conan Doyle’s way, King said, ???I don’t want him to go over the Reichenbach Falls,??? referring to Sherlock Holmes’ demise and his subsequent comeback.
John Irving and Stephen King, the horror novelist, told a press conference that they wanted Rowling to be lenient after reports that she may kill Harry off. Irving said that his ???fingers are crossed for Harry???. Rowling, however, turned the requests around and pointed out that both Irving, the writer of The World According To Garp and King, the horror novelist of Carrie, have also eliminated many of their characters. ???When fans accuse me of sadism, which doesn’t happen that often, I feel I’m toughening them up to go on and read John and Stephen’s books,??? she quipped, then added, ???I think they’ve got to be toughened up somehow. It’s a cruel literary world out there.???
Rowling has also shown no compunctions in killing off characters. A major one dies in book six, because, according to her, by tradition of the genre, the main lead had to manage dealing with life and its villains to become a true hero. Killing Harry off would make him a martyr and the internet is abuzz with blogs pondering this earth-shattering matter. She said recently that she had changed her planned ending so that one character survived the series, but another much-loved hero would face the chop. ???I have to say that two [characters] die that I didn???t intend to die . . . A price has to be paid. We are dealing with pure evil here. They don???t target extras, do they? They go for the main characters.???
Which is what might even save the young wizard. Public opinion has a way of making authors change their minds.
On Hermione and Ron and the magic between them, Rowling said they would probably take their relationship to the next level. ???Hermione most likely wants to see the three of them alive, unscathed and Voldemort finished, but I think she also wants to see herself closely entwined with another person. I think you can probably guess,??? she said, but asserted that Harry and Hermoine are never going to be more than friends. ???There are people who wanted Harry and Hermione. They’re still out there. Come on now,??? she laughed.
Though Rowling said she was amazed at the relationship wars ??? the “gang warfare” between fans who want certain relationships to happen between characters ??? she doesn’t need any more feedback about “weird couplings.” “Jane Austen probably got less feedback,” she joked.
Rowling warned: Potter fans, with instant communication technology on their side, are on high alert to save the wizard???s life. Any murderous intent on her part will be resisted. Harry Potter may yet live. When she finally walked onstage, the young’uns howled so loudly that Rowling looked slightly embarrassed and mildly terrified. “The great thing about tonight: no pressure,” she said. “I do have the best shoes, though.”
While waiting to learn Harry Potter’s fate odds makers posted a new enticing prop: “What will be the title of the 7th book in the Harry Potter series: Harry Potter and the Parseltongue Trophy or Harry Potter and the Great Revelation?”
