A naked teacher who took her clothes off for a Channel 4 series called How to Look Good Naked, defended her actions, saying she was not told she would have to strip off. Emma Wright, 37, who teaches at a £7,000 a year prep school in Streatham and Clapham High School, in south London, said producers also failed to mention the programme was called ‘How to Look Good Naked’.
The naked teacher, Emma Wright, posed nude for a photographer and talked about her sex life, her nude pose were even projected on to the side of Waterloo Station as part of the body-affirming programme.
Now the Girls’ Day School Trust, the UK’s largest independent education group with 19,500 pupils at 26 sites, is to ask the school to explain itself when term begins in September. A spokeswoman for the Girls’ Day School Trust, which owns the prep school where Miss Wright works, said she had informed the headteacher that she was appearing on the show and had taken part in a personal capacity.
Wright insists she thought she was taking part in a self-improvement series and was smooth-talked into posing naked for pictures that were projected 100ft tall on the side of Waterloo station.
“There was nothing in the ad about being naked, that was way down the line,†she said. “It was only when I saw the contract and the name of the show that I balked at it, but the programme-makers said they just needed an eye-catching title.
“The programme-makers kept me in the dark,” she said. “I turned up each day not knowing what I was doing. On the day of the photo shoot they literally sat me down and asked if I was prepared to go naked.
“I agreed but said what I would and wouldn’t allow to be shown. I did cry. It was such a momentous occasion,” Ms Wright explained.
The show has certainly boosted Wright’s self-confidence. “They were filming just before Wimbledon and I pulled a 29-year-old tennis player for a one-night stand,†she said. “He withdrew from the tournament because of groin strain.â€
Christine Di Ahna, whose daughter is taught by Ms Wright said: “I would be appalled at the thought of my pupils’ fathers seeing me in my underwear. She took two weeks off, during which the children had to have a supply teacher. She should have done it in her own time.”
Another Marzena Scanlan, whose eight-year-old daughter is taught by Miss Wright too, told the Evening Standard: “We knew she was doing the programme. She had bad dress sense and worse very unflattering stuff. “Featuring naked on TV may not be the best thing from a career point of view but it’s not going to distract her from being a good teacher.”
Gok Wan, the fashion stylist who presents the show which has attracted as many as 3.4m viewers, said: “The women who come on the show genuinely want some help to change their lives. We want the whole thing to be spontaneous so we did not tell them what they would be doing until the actual show.â€
The programme aims to show women how to look better without resorting to cosmetic surgery. Programme presenter, stylist Gok Wan said the show was spontaneous and helped to boost women’s confidence.
