Clothes designer Ralph Lauren has been inspired by futuristic technology shown in the Tom Cruise film Minority Report to allow New Yorkers to buy clothes without entering the premises, using a touch-screen system on the window. The Ralph Lauren Polo Store is reinventing window shopping by mounting a 67-inch touch-screen on its window display, where shoppers passing by can purchase merchandise, pressing gently on the image and then swiping their credit card in the slot provided - even when the shop is shut. The system scans the customer’s credit card through the window and clothes are then sent to their home address.
Polo Ralph Lauren’s senior vice-president for marketing, David Lauren, said the idea had been inspired by Steven Spielberg’s film Minority Report. “After watching Steven Spielberg’s Minority Report, I really wanted to find a way of making that amazing technology a retail reality.
In the film, characters can manipulate graphics and data in mid-air using a special pair of gloves.
The defence company Raytheon is reported to be working on a real-life version of the technology for military use.
“We are thrilled to offer such a unique and exciting way for our customers to further explore the world of Ralph Lauren. With this initiative we are reinventing the concept of shopping any time.”
The window shopping will also sell ball boy and girl uniforms and linesman’s jackets, delivery of the clothes is a bit more low tech: by the mailman, in a cardboard box.
Ryan Lally, a spokesman for Polo Ralph Lauren, said the window-shopping system was more than a gimmick. “We have experienced some sales from it,” he said. “If you’re walking past the window, but it happens to be 11 o’clock at night, it’s an ideal solution.”
The window shopping display will be available 24 hours a day until the end of the U.S. Open tournament, Sept. 10.
