Elle Macpherson has accused fellow supermodel Heidi Klum of stealing her nickname, after the German catwalk queen called herself “The Body” in a television commercial. Heidi Klum has been claiming the title for herself in a saturation Victoria’s Secret ad campaign for The Body bra. “They call me The Body — and now I have a bra named after me,” the German hottie claims in TV commercials.
And with a multi-million pound lingerie business and hundreds of shoots in top fashion magazines, supermodel Elle Macpherson’s moniker looked to be set in stone. Australian Elle Macpherson has used the moniker since it was used to describe her in a Time magazine cover story in 1986.
They’ve both had to get their bods back into shape after having two kids, and Heidi’s expecting her third pretty soon. The only major difference between the two is that Elle’s ten years older than Heidi. Klum is 5′9″, and Elle is an even 6′.
The adverts, airing in America as part of the product launch this week, show Ms Klum, who smoulderingly drawls to the camera: “They call me The Body-and now I have one named after me.”
Melissa Edwards, spokesperson for Macpherson’s underwear company Elle Macpherson Intimates, tells the New York Daily News, “We saw that and were like, ‘Oh my god!’ We were initially flabbergasted. “We have numerous press clippings in the office referring to her as ‘The Body.’ Everything from Harper’s Bazaar to Vogue to the recent Sports Illustrated calls her that. In terms of public record, that name belongs to Elle.”
Elle Macpherson markets her own skin-care line, “Elle Macpherson The Body,” along with a lingerie brand and a fitness video titled “The Body Workout.” Klum — who was once called “The Body Two,” in deference to Elle — is a relative Heidi-come-lately, and didn’t hit the United States until the late 1990s. Both Klum and Macpherson have been favorites of the Sports Illustrated annual swimsuit issue, and both appeared in the mag’s latest.
Furious bosses for the Australian supermodel’s lingerie line, Elle Macpherson Intimates, are viewing the campaign as a clear attempt to leach some of their marketshare.
The range, sold in most British department stores including Selfridges and Harvey Nichols, courted controversy last year with provocative shots of semi-naked models holding weapons including kitchen knives in an advertising campaign.
Heidi Klum already have a son, one-year-old Henry. The supermodel has a daughter, Leni, with ex-boyfriend, Renault Formula One mogul Flavio Briatore. She also found fame through Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, and raised her profile after cameo appearances in Sex and the City and Spin City. She has used her modelling career to launch a range of products, including jewellery, swimwear, children’s clothes and even a fragrance, called ‘Heidi’.
The supermodel, who gets paid an estimated £150,000 per picture, married British singer Seal in May 2005.
Both supermodels were unavailable for comment.
