The Museum of Sex in New York City unveiled its latest acquisition today: a presidential bust of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, cast in resin. The sculptor hopes his work will spark discussion about sex, politics and celebrity. According to the museum’s press release: “Artist Daniel Edwards describes this new sculpture as capturing Clinton ‘with her head held high, a youthful spirit and a face matured by wisdom. Presented in a low cut gown, her cleavage is on display prominently portraying sexual power which some people still consider too threatening.”
Edwards said his work features a soft “presidential smile” and wrinkles framing her eyes. A floral pattern runs across her breasts, part of Edwards’ effort to present Clinton “as a woman — not a covered-up person, but as a woman.”
“I didn’t want to give her a face lift or change her age,” he said of his work.
“The key was to reveal her chest a little bit. She usually covers herself up, but I don’t think that’s necessary.”
He said he was inspired to sculpt Clinton by a quote from actress Sharon Stone, who said voters wouldn’t elect Clinton president until she was “past her sexuality.”
Edwards has a knack for creating pieces that attract publicity — his last work, unveiled at a gallery in Brooklyn, depicted Britney Spears on her knees giving birth on a bearskin rug.
Clinton is widely thought to be considering a presidential run in 2008 but has not yet declared her plans. Senator Clinton’s office refused comment.
