Sophia Loren Tops in Natural Beauty Poll
Italian actress Sophia Loren has beaten much younger contenders to be voted and crowned the world’s most naturally beautiful person at the age of 71 in an online poll. The poll included 1,578 individuals’ picks for a celebrity who embodies natural beauty without conforming to stereotypes.
The Italian beauty, best known for her Oscar winning role in La Ciociara, beat Catherine Zeta Jones, Cameron Diaz and Charlotte Church to win the Dare To Be Bare Award. The veteran screen siren is also set to feature alongside beauties Penelope Cruz and Naomi Watts in next year’s Pirelli calendar. And she will pose naked there.
Loren has spoken out about rejecting cosmetic surgery on her nose when she was younger and is well known for her looks. Loren puts her curves and complexion down to “a love of life, spaghetti, and the odd bath in virgin olive oil” as her ancient Romans secret. The screen icon has spoken about resisting pressure to have cosmetic surgery on her nose early in her career. Such is Sophia’s appeal she’s even had devout men of the cloth in a fluster, with the Archbishop of Genoa observing that although the Vatican opposed human cloning, “an exception might be made in the case of Sophia Loren”.
The Edinburgh-born television presenter Gail Porter, who recently suffered total hair loss due to alopecia, was listed tenth in the poll for being “comfortable with who she is” despite losing her hair. Ms Porter’s hair began to fall out as she battled depression, which she is still being treated for.
She has said: “I get my good days and my bad days. One minute I can be absolutely fine, then I need to have a tissue for a minute. It started off as an illness and now it’s a test. I have to find happiness within myself and know the people who accept me for who I am.”
However, she added that it could be much worse. “I know I haven’t got cancer, I know it’s just hair, but it’s something I’ve got used to.”
