Emmy Awards 2006 Winners

Kiefer Sutherland accepts Emmy award for best actor in a drama series pictureAfter top ratings, five seasons and 120 episodes of the adrenaline-fuelled spy thriller, as well as having received eight previous acting Emmy nominations, Federal Agent Jack Bauer finally won over the 12 000-member Academy. Sutherland seemed dazed and flattered by all the attention.
“It’s surreal. It’s surprisingly humbling when you look out and you see all those other actors — such great actors, and such great shows. I’m very thankful and grateful,” the Canadian actor told AP.
Heart-pounding spy thriller 24 finally broke through at the Emmy Awards on Sunday, winning the prize as best drama series in its fifth try, while new workplace satire The Office was crowned best comedy. An espionage thriller, 24 has competed in the top drama category for five consecutive years. This was its first win of the highest honor in American television.

Though NBC, which telecast the Emmys, is struggling in prime-time – a point host Conan O’Brien spoofed in a song-and-dance number – the network won six awards, including best comedy for its offbeat series The Office, based on the Ricky Gervais version, and best actress in a drama series, to Mariska Hargitay of the long-running Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.
While NBC’s comedy My Name Is Earl did not get a best comedy nomination, it won two Emmys for director Marc Buckland and writer Greg Garcia.
Fellow cast members for 24 at Emmy AwardTwo of the network’s longest-running shows, The West Wing and the comedy Will & Grace, also took awards for supporting actor and actress in their respective genres. Megan Mullally won her second Emmy as the spoiled Karen Walker, while Alan Alda picked up his sixth Emmy (he’s received 32 nominations) for his role as the unsuccessful Republican presidential candidate on The West Wing. Both shows ended in the US in May.
