Eyes are often a womanâ€™s best feature, but they can also show the first signs of ageing, stress and tiredness. From simple make-up tricks you can try at home, to radical surgical options, here is everything you have ever wanted to know about turning back the clock and making your eyes look younger, healthier and move vibrant.

In just 20 minutes, you can have eyes everyone wants to look at. There are so many ways to make your eyes look brighter and clearer: the way you shape your brows and wear your eye make-up, not to mention instant fix-its, such as tightening and filling creams or even Botox injections!

Thereâ€™s no real mystery to it â€“ every make-up artist on the planet uses one simple rule: where you use light shadow, the eye will appear to come forward. So, if you have deep-set eyes, ditch the dark colours â€“ youâ€™ll make your eyes look hollow. If your eyes are shallow-set, use dark shades to add depth.

Colours youâ€™ll love. Warm, soft shades are always the safest choise in eyeshadows. Nudes or neutral colours create an even skin. They also reflect light better than the dark colours, so the eye area will look brighter.

Colours to avoid. If you have crowâ€™s-feet or crepey skin on your lids, avoid frosted or glittery eyeshadows that will draw attention to any flaws. Strong colours are best used sparingly. Bright colours, and many brown shades, can be harder, try peach, apricot and terracotta, which make eyes look younger.

Longer lashes. Plump, long lashes make eyes look sexy. When beautiful black lashes contrast with the clear eye whites, the look is drop-dead gorgeous. You can brighten whites with a few drops of Visine or a similar eye preparation, but getting lush lashes is trickier.

A simple way to achieve ultra-long lashes is by using an eyelash curler. You can pick one up at your local chemist. Be careful not to squeeze the pads too close to the lid â€“ an eyelid caught in curlers is torture â€“ and always curl lashes before applying mascara.

BOTOX: the toxin phenomenon. Botox is a toxin that comes from the botulism bacterium and is used to paralyse temporarily the muscles that cause wrinkle. Botox is injected directly into muscles around the eye that cause lines such as crowâ€™s-feet and frown furrows in the forehead. Although it takes only about 20 minutes to have Botox injected, it takes a day or two to see the results. Those results should last for three to four months, during which time the skin looks smoother and, in some cases, wrinkles totally disappear.

There are some possible side effects of the Botox treatment that you should take into account. If the toxin leaks into nearby muscles, it can weaken or paralyse them, resulting in a droopy eyelid or eyebrow. This is not a common problem, but is worth considering as the droopiness can be quite significant and last about two weeks after having their foreheads done. There is some pain during the injections, which feel like ant bites, but this subsides quickly. Importantly, if youâ€™re pregnant, or hoping to be, itâ€™s probably wise to avoid the treatment. It costs between $250 and $400 per area of the face and the manufacturer reports no permanent side effects of Botox to date.
