Austrian teenager Natascha Kampusch, who was held captive for eight years in a windowless underground cell for 8 1/2 years, plans a television interview to reveal her ordeal to be broadcast on Wednesday. Kampusch’s media representative, Dieter Ecker, told reporters she would be interviewed by Austrian public broadcaster ORF in a session expected to be aired nationwide.
Ecker said Kampusch, who bolted to freedom on August 23 after more than eight years of captivity, planned to grant only two other interviews: one to the mass-circulation Kronen Zeitung daily and the other to the weekly magazine News.
Although the 18-year-old has been besieged by hundreds of requests for interviews since she bolted to freedom on August 23, Kampusch has consented to only two others – one to the mass-circulation daily, Kronen Zeitung, and the other to the weekly magazine, News, said Ecker.
“For Natascha Kampusch, it was natural that the Austrian people ??? who have feared for her life for eight years and have celebrated her escape ??? should get the details first,” he said.
That was why the first interview would be with the ORF.
The two print media had been chosen for showing “social competence, and declaring themselves willing to give Natascha Kampusch a start to a future life in human dignity.”
Ecker said Natascha Kampusch will be “shielded” in some way during the ORF interview to ensure she is not recognisable on the street. That suggested that the public, which so far has seen only photos taken before her kidnapping at age 10 and computer-generated likenesses of her now, may have to wait for a better idea of her appearance.
ORF did not offer “a single cent” for the interview, and it was unclear whether the newspaper or the magazine would pay, although Ecker said Kampusch had turned down some lucrative offers.
“Every decision is right and wrong,” he said.
The teenager escaped the house she had been held in since the age of 10 on 23 August. Her captor, Wolfgang Priklopil, 44, killed himself after her escape. Kampusch has been resting at a secure, undisclosed location since her escape, and has been helping investigators piece together details of her abduction and captivity.
