Vanessa Milde, Schoolgirl Model Loses Tights, Courtesy Her Thin Body
It was a model’s worst nightmare but Adelaide model Vanessa Milde dealt with her “Jennifer Hawkins moment” like a true professional. 15 year old Vanessa Milde, who is being projected as the next Gemma Ward lost her tights due to the thinness of her body on the final day of Melbourne Fashion Week. She has already been signed by IMG, an international model agency.
But long ??? very long ??? legs aren’t much chop in standard issue tights. Poor Milde found that out yesterday as her pantyhose descended, little by little, on her lap of the catwalk for Sydney label Daviseyes at Australian Fashion Week.
“I knew they were coming down, I could feel it as soon as I came out,” said the 180-centimetre (5 feet 11 inches) modelling starlet from Adelaide. “I had to decide: if I pulled them up, I knew they’d fall down again and I’d still look ridiculous, so I let nature take its course.”
Vanessa Milde, the star of this Melbourne Fashion Week event, opened most parades in the three-day festival – was yesterday fielding back-to-back media interviews and taking the catwalk wardrobe mishap all in her long stride. She dispelled reports her tights slid down because her legs were too thin, saying: “The tights were just too short. I knew it was happening but there wasn’t anything I could do, so I just kept walking. It was a bit of a Jennifer Hawkins moment,” Milde said.
She continued, as if oblivious to the drama heading towards her ankles and threatening to lock her knees together. “It was my Jennifer Hawkins moment.”
Daviseyes designer Justine Davis was as mortified as you can be amid fits of laughter. “She handled it absolutely beautifully,” she said of Milde.
Alongside DavisEyes was mid-market designer Showoff presenting a less directional collection from the other young designers taking part.
Former Miss Universe Jennifer Hawkins was famously left with only her underwear on when she lost her dress at a Westfield appearance in 2004 and supermodel Naomi Campbell toppled off platforms during a Vivienne Westwood parade in 1993.
Brisbane fashion designer Gail Reid was most impressive among the sought-after shows on the final day with her Gail Sorronda label. She is not only a fashion designer but a model and stylist as well. She says that she was amazed to meet Balenciaga designer Nicholas Ghesquiere and Givenchy designer Ricardo Tisci and within 24 hours of her return to Australia, she showed her designs in the Brisbane Fashion Festival before showing them one week later in Melbourne.
“Gail’s designs look simple but they are actually very considered, feminine but quite conceptual,” said Far Eastern Department Stores group manager Rebecca Hsu.
Rebecca Hsu, Group Manager of Far Eastern Department Store informed that she was planning to buy Reid’s “extremely impressive collection”. Next week she is scheduled to showcase her collections in London Fashion Week.
