Mystery Deepens on Bree, The Lonelygirl15 Video Diary
Category : Women Diary, Women Gossip, Women Personality

Lonelygirl15 on Video imageA home-schooled teenager named lonelygirl15 (also known as Bree, real name Jessica Rose) is heating up the Internet like few others today as a controversial user at the popular video hosting website YouTube, whose vlogs have elicited mass popularity and speculation as to her authenticity as a real person; it is alleged that she is an actress and that the situations depicted in her videos have been fictionalized as a means of promotion. The mystery has fuelled the popularity of the short videos that are a staple on a growing number of websites devoted to posting homemade entertainment. Is she real? Is she planning to participate in some Satanic ritual? Or is she merely an actress, and if so, who are the people responsible for mounting the charade?
This Internet whodunit centers on 16-year-old Bree’s “Lonelygirl15″ online video diaries posted on sites such as YouTube and MySpace. They’ve caused a cyber-stir not seen since “The Blair Witch Project.”

The short clips show “Bree’, who goes by the YouTube nickname of Lonelygirl15, talking into the camera about life in a small town, her religious parents and her “study buddy”, Daniel. Her 29 clips – with titles like I Probably Shouldn’t Post This…, Boy Problems… and My Parents Suck… – have been viewed over 2.3 million times. And with 23,369 subscribers, Lonelygirl15′s channel has become the second most popular YouTube video feed of all time.
No one has publicly laid claim to her work, but she is starting to look as connected in Hollywood as any starlet. Many feature people just sitting in front of video cameras, talking about the mundane happenings in their lives or ranting about some issue or another.

But the postings’ polished nature and the intriguing inconsistencies in the stories led many to suspect that lonelygirl15 was fake. The proof, it was said, is that Bree never reacts on-screen to comments posted about her, never wavers from the plot. “She’s just a little too charming, her videos a little too well edited, and her story a little too neatly laid out,” Adam Sternbergh wrote in the New York magazine late last month.
Web detectives also concluded that Bree’s MySpace account was being controlled by someone using a computer at the Hollywood talent firm Creative Artists Agency. Three lonelygirl-obsessed amateur internet sleuths (Shaina Wedmedyk, an 18-year-old Oberlin College freshman; Chris Patterson, a 36-year old software engineer from Tulsa, Okla.; and a 23-year-old law student in Pennsylvania) set up a sting using tracking software, which appears to show that emails sent from a lonelygirl15 account came from the offices of Beverly Hills talent agency Creative Artists Agency. A spokesman for the agency told the paper that he could “neither confirm nor deny” links with lonelygirl15.

Soon after the report was published on the internet a notice purporting to be from a group of independent filmmakers posted on the mock fan site Lonelygirl15.com (website could not be reached, either because of a crash, foul play or another turn in the story) stating that Bree was indeed an actress. The “Creators,” who describe themselves as filmmakers but not part of a big corporation, go on to promise a new Web site featuring interactive storytelling where “the line between “fan” and “star” has been removed, and dedicated fans like yourselves are paid for their efforts.”

“To Our Incredible Fans”, it began noted on the websote. ” Thank you so much for enjoying our show so far. We are amazed by the overwhelmingly positive response to our videos; it has exceeded our wildest expectations. With your help we believe we are witnessing the birth of a new art form.”
The note, posted Sept. 7, continued: “Right now, the biggest mystery of Lonelygirl15 is ‘who is she?’ We think this is an oversimplification. Lonelygirl15 is a reflection of everyone. She is no more real or fictitious than the portions of our personalities that we choose to show (or hide) when we interact with the people around us.”

Early reaction from fans to the seeming admission has been mixed. Riana Giammarco, who curates a lonelygirl15 discussion board, said, “I knew they were acting, and whether or not it was independent or represented, I didn’t really care.” But she warned that lonelygirl15 “has the potential to become uninteresting if they don’t spice it up a bit now that their secret is out”.
While not everyone is convinced that the filmmakers’ confession is genuine (many believe it’s part of the developing mystery), it now seems certain now that Lonelygirl15 is a fake – although who is behind the hoax and what is purpose of the elaborate ruse is still unclear.

In a video posted a week ago titled Bree The Cookie Monster, Bree and Daniel rate batches of cookies they said they baked. “Hi. You are a great actress,” Daniel Gardner said in a message left on Lonelygirl15′s YouTube site on Saturday. “We hate your director and crew … but can’t help loving you.”
