Unless you happened to have lived in a very deep and dark cave for the last couple of years, then chances are that you have been hearing more and more about these new “super molecules” known as antioxidants. Studies have linked increase consumption of foods rich in antioxidants with decreased rates of heart disease, colon cancer, and even liver disease. There are also a growing number of studies claiming that antioxidants may actually be able to slow the effects of aging itself.
But is there really any way these antioxidants can help with the prevention of aging on top of all the other benefits attributed to them??
The body is continually being invaded by toxins from our environment. Unfortunately, the body is also producing toxins as a result of both digestion and oxidation. Foods are a common source of toxins but so is the very oxygen we breathe. Your body must digest, or oxidize, in order to survive. Oxidation leads to the production of free radicals which positively wreak havoc on your body.
Essentially, free radicals are toxins in your body that cause severe cellular damage, a weakened immune system, and even elevated risks for some kinds of cancer, such as colon or prostrate cancer. Cigarette smoke, alcohol, and caffeine are all things that increase oxidation’s and thus the free radicals that have even been linked to premature aging.
Antioxidants help with the prevention of aging because they neutralize the free radicals that are known to cause nerve damage. Memory loss and troubles with concentration are can both be linked to nerve damage. By neutralizing the free radicals (and in some cases even slowing oxidation itself), antioxidants help with the prevention against aging by preventing nerve damage.
Free radicals are also known to cause inflammation in the joints and aggravation of symptoms relating to arthritis. The free radicals cause the cartilage at the joints to deteriorate and thus strip away the body’s natural shock absorber for your bones. Antioxidants help with the prevention against aging by neutralizing the free radicals responsible for inflaming your joints and arthritis symptoms.
The skin also prematurely ages because of free radicals. This is because these “radicals” interfere with the normal production of lipids, or the oils that help lubricate and protect the skin.
Free radicals will disrupt the normal function of the sebaceous glands which produce the lipids. These oils are essential because they help retain moisture on your skin. If enough oils are not produced, then moisture will escape and your skin will dry, wrinkle, and age before its time.
Antioxidants help with the prevention against aging by eliminating excess free radicals and thus helping to restore your sebaceous glands to normal operation. When the skin is properly lubricated and retaining moisture, it remains smooth and healthy.
Prolonged problems with lipid production can cause irreversible damage to your skin which is why you need to eat a diet rich in antioxidants. Foods rich in beta carotene, such as carrots, apricots, spinach, and some algae all have antioxidants that will help with the prevention of aging. Citrus fruits are also a good source of antioxidants because they are rich in Vitamin C, and antioxidant nutrient.
Other great sources of antioxidants that will help in the prevention of aging are: acai berry, green tea, sun chlorella, and spiritulina.
