• Bipolar disorder, also known as manic depressive illness, is characterised by extreme mood shifts - an affected person can swing from excessive highs (mania) to profound hopelessness (depression), usually with periods of normal mood in between. Some people experience both mania and depression at the same time.
• Some evidence suggests this depression may be genetic.
• The type, severity and duration of mood episodes can vary and they may last for a few days or several months at a time.
• Treatment usually involves a combination of medication, community support and counselling. Mood stabilisers, such as lithium, are used to treat the condition in the manic phase and to prevent relapses, while antidepressant medication may be used in the depressive phase. ECT (electro convulsive therapy) may be used for very severe depression.
