Madonna Tops Female Earnings Record

Madonna, The ‘Material Girl’ singer has become the world’s highest paid female singer, as awarded by 2007 edition of the Guinness Book of Records. The pop superstar Madonna has smashed singing rival Britney Spears record for the highest annual earnings by a female singer. With her $50 million in earnings last year, ‘Material Girl’ Madonna replaced Britney Spears for highest annual earnings by a female singer, ABC News said Friday.
Britney had held on to the record since 2001, when she entered the Guinness World Records, earning $20.5 million in 2000.
In July Madonna’s ‘Like a Prayer’ was voted the most groundbreaking video of all time. The singer topped a poll conducted by music channel MTV, beating View the profile for Michael Jackson on Celebrity Spotlightoff stiff competition from Britney Spears’ ‘Baby One More Time’ and Michael Jackson’s classic ‘Thriller’. Madonna’s ‘Confessions’ world tour was recently named the top grossing tour ever by a female artist.
The controversial show - which started in Los Angeles on May 21 and ended at the Tokyo dome last Thursday (21.09.06) - has made $193.7 million.
Despite the relentless media coverage of her personal life, Spears is also unseated by another 40-something as the world’s most searched-for person and most searched-for news item on the Internet. She loses those top spots to pop diva Janet Jackson who also gets credit for the largest ever fine imposed on a broadcaster after her infamous ‘wardrobe malfunction’ with one of her breasts was exposed live on air during the Super Bowl XXXVIII halftime show, ABC said.
Among men, Brad Pitt was the most searched-for.
The latest edition of the Guinness Book of World Records also hails crooner James Blunt’s Back to Bedlam album for selling the most copies in the UK in a year with 2,368,000 copies in 2005. And rock newcomers Arctic Monkeys for having the fastest selling UK debut album with Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not. It sold 363,735 copies in its first week and 113,000 on its first day.
Simon Cowell is the highest paid TV talent show judge earning $18 million, Jamie Oliver is the highest paid chef with an estimated annual income of $4.8 million and Ricky Gervais is the most downloaded podcast.
Harry Potter author JK Rowling has the record for the highest annual earnings for a children’s writer with an estimated £34.2 million.
Elsewhere in the book: Nicole Kidman set the record for the highest salary per minute for an actor (a reported $3.71 million for a four-minute commercial for Chanel No. 5) and Oprah Winfrey is named the highest-paid person on TV ($225 million, according to the last Forbes power ranking). At the cinema, director Peter Jackson’s remake of King Kong smashed the box-office record for the most expensive movie ever made at $207-million, according to the 2007 edition of the records book.
Actor-director Clint Eastwood, at 6 foot, 4 inches, is one of the tallest male actors. Sigourney Weaver, standing 6 feet tall, is among the tallest actresses. Hollywood hunk Brad Pitt was the man most sought on search engine Google.
U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., earned top spot for penning the fastest-selling non-fiction book after her memoir sold 200,000 in one day.
