When premenstrual, most women suffer minor symptoms such as tiredness, irritability or fluid retention. But for others symptoms can be so severe they damage relationships and leave sufferers feeling depressed or suicidal. PMS (Premenstrual Syndrome) is caused by changes in the hormone levels. This usually means varying energy levels or breast tenderness. With severe PMS, hormone levels shoot up and down, causing some women to feel they are on an emotional rollercoaster ride.
Is it the real thing?
??? Do you have at least one of the following symptoms-breast pain, bloating, swollen hands or feet, headache or exhaustion?
??? Do you have at least one emotional symptom – depression, irritability, bursts of anger, confusion or an urge to withdraw from people?
??? Does this happen for at least five days leading up to your periods?
??? Do symptoms ease off within four days of your period starting and not begin again until around day 12?
??? Does this cause difficulties at home or work, or “out of control” frustration or anger?
If you answered “yes” to three or four of the above, it is time to do something about PMS. Try a combination of vitamins B1 and B6 and evening primrose oil. Give them time to take effect-expect to feel better in about two to three months. Another tip is to exercise vigorously when symptoms appear. If symptoms persist, talk to your GP, because hormone treatment may help.
