A recent report from E-Poll Market Research in Encino, Calif., found that singer-actress Jessica Simpson is the latest most “overexposed” celebrity among more than 2,800 celebrities on 46 different personality attributes. Ther report revealed that the blond singer has made an unprecedented jump in her “overexposed” score over the last three years to top this year’s list.
Jessica Simpson’s score went from 17 percent in September 2003 to 41 percent in mid-2006. (The average for most celebrities at the peak of their careers is between 3-7 percent.) During that same period, Simpson???s ???talented??? score dropped from 36 percent to a disappointing 28 percent reports MSNBC.
Professionally, Simpson, is all over the place as well, but the face that sells a thousand tabloids is having trouble opening movies and moving albums. Her second film, “Employee of the Month,” grossed just $11.4 million in its opening weekend, good for No. 4. And while her first film – last year’s remake of The Dukes of Hazzard – drew a reasonable $US80 million ($107m) at theatres, it’s unclear that she’ll ever be able to play anyone other than Jessica Simpson.
Her current album, “A Public Affair,” has sold 212,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. That’s a far cry from the 2.9 million copies sold of 2003′s “In This Skin.” Her ex, Nick Lachey, is doing better with his album, “What’s Left of Me,” which has moved 540,000 copies.
Her newest album is the fifth she has recorded for Sony BMG but she can’t draw much of a crowd in concert.
You can also buy her new line of “Hair U Wear” wigs. Or her “Dessert Beauty” line of edible “bath and body” treats. Simpson has the Dessert line of skin care products and is hawking HairDo extensions with her hairstylist/best friend, Ken Paves. And she plans to open a Hooters-like restaurant with her father. You can get as much access to Simpson and a slew of other instant stars as you want, whenever you want it.
Simpson claims singing comes naturally to her, but acting is another story saying: “I never thought I would see myself on the big screen. That, to me, was something so unreachable.” Simpson seems to realize that singing is her core identity, saying music “is something I always knew I would have.” Media reports claimed the star was in line to land the role of sexy Lucy Ewing, but she failed to impress film-makers with her acting skills.
The latest stories had her in love with musician John Mayer. Simpson says she “adores” the singer as a person and friend. She dismisses tales of her hookups with “Employee” co-star Cook and her “Hazzard” buddy, Johnny Knoxville, and says she’s “definitely single. I haven’t been heartbroken since Nick.”
The obsession with her private life is so intense paparazzi follow her everywhere. Simpson and Cook found ways to toy with the photographers.
“If you’re near her, you’re linked to her,” Cook says. “We’d have lighting guys walk outside and hug Jessica because there were paparazzi out there.”
Other stars the public would supposedly like to see less of include Tom Cruise, Anna Nicole Smith and both Britney Spears and her husband Kevin Federline. ???It???s a challenge because celebrity in many ways is defined by how much exposure you get,??? explains Robert Thompson, the founding director of the Centre for the Study of Popular Television at Syracuse University.
He said celebrities had to tread a fine line between courting the spotlight and knowing when to retreat. ???But the perfect equation is to get as much exposure as you possibly can right up to the moment when it gets to be too much, and then you want to pull back.???
