I’ve wrote about A Facelift For Your Teeth, where you can have can have a movie star smile with these new cosmetic dentistry techniques. And here I add some additional techniques:

BRIDGES
Made from the same material as crowns, a bridge is a way of replacing one or more missing teeth. To create a bridge, a dentist first has to put crowns on the teeth on either side of the missing tooth or teeth. The bridge is then cemented to the crowned teeth.
How is it done? Similar to making a crown. Takes at least three visits.

TOOTH BONDING
This is a quick way to make slightly crooked or uneven teeth look straighter (or even fill in small gaps). Bonding reshapes teeth by adding tooth-coloured material called composite resin.
It’s a simple and relatively inexpensive procedure that can make a subtle but real difference. The down side is that if you smoke or drink a lot of tea, coffee or red wine, composite resin will stain and chip more easily than either natural enamel or porcelain veneers. Bonding also has a shorter life than a veneer - about three to 10 years. It can be redone but subsequent procedures can wear away more of the tooth structure.

How is it done? The dentist prepares the tooth surface for bonding, then applies pliable resin, moulding it onto the tooth to get the right effect. Once the tooth has been reshaped, the resin is set hard under a laser light. Each tooth takes about an hour to reshape.

DENTAL IMPLANTS
A tooth implant is a sophisticated fake tooth that you never have to take out - it’s attached to a titanium screw, which is anchored permanently in your jaw. Implant surgery might not be simple, quick or cheap, but because implants have so many advantages over dentures, more people are opting for them. Not only do implants look and feel natural, but they also stop your gums and the bone in your jaw from shrinking - and that’s important for the sake of your looks. When you lose a tooth, the supporting bone shrinks away, which can eventually have an ageing effect on the face.

Are you ever too old for a tooth implant? As long as you’re in good general health, you are never too old for any kind of cosmetic dentistry. But you do need to have enough bone in your jaw to support an implant (although a bone graft is, possible if you don’t).

How is it done? The first stage involves placing the titanium implant into the jawbone under local or general anaesthetic. Then it’s a usually a question of wearing a denture over the implant and waiting three to six months for nature to do her, stuff - letting the bone attach itself to the implant so that the two become inseparable. Stage two is minor gum surgery to connect the new tooth to the,implant. However, a new technique now being tried by some practitioners means that a temporary tooth can be attached at stage one, so there’s no need for dentures.

Implants sound painful, but there’s no major discomfort (you may need to take pain-killers for a day or so after each stage) and there is no risk of rejection.
However, their success rate (around 85 to 95 per cent) depends not only on having an expert do the job, but also on expert evaluation to make sure you’re a suitable candidate with enough bone to keep the implant in place.

GUM CONTOURING
Some problems can be fixed by changing the gum line rather than the teeth. If you have small square teeth that show a lot of gum, for instance, it may be that your teeth haven’t erupted properly and are still partly hidden by your gums.

These teeth can be lengthened by having gum surgery to trim the excess gum. If gums have receded, on the other hand, exposing the thin neck of the tooth (an ageing look), it may be possible to replace some of the lost gum using grafted gum or tissue from elsewhere in your mouth.

How is it done? Gum contouring is done by a periodontist (gum specialist). Trimming excess gum can be done in one session. Gum grafts take about two visits.
