It depends what you want. Unlike medicine, which has a separate speciality of plastic surgery, the dental profession has no formal qualification for cosmetic dentistry – what sets one dentist apart from another in this area is how much experience they’ve had in cosmetic work.
Although some dental practices specialise in cosmetic work, most general dentists do some cosmetic procedures, such as tooth whitening, crowns and veneers. For tooth implants, however, you need to see a dentist who is very experienced in the procedure, or a dentist who has also trained as a prosthodontist, a speciality which involves tooth and jaw reconstruction.
Be prepared to ask questions – what kind of training has the dentist done? How many times has he/she done the procedure you want? Can you see some before and after photos? (If the photos are of the dentist’s own work, it can be a good sign that he or she is experienced in the procedure).
If your own dentist can’t do what you want, ask for a referral to someone who can. Ask around your friends – has anyone had the procedure? Would they recommend the dentist who did it?
