Reality TV star Nicole Richie, whose rail thin appearance in recent photos has stoked tabloid speculation that she has an eating disorder, is taking a break from “The Simple Life” to do something most of us find pretty simple to do: gain weight, and checked into a private medical treatment facility to seek help. “Nicole Richie has decided to undergo diagnostic treatment to determine why she’s not been putting on any weight,” the socialite representatives tells PEOPLE in a statement. “She is working with a team of doctors and specialists whose focus is nutrition. It is important to Nicole that she achieves this goal in a healthy way as this is not a treatment for an eating disorder.” Richie’s publicist stressed this is not treatment for an eating disorder, but a series of diagnostic tests.
Despite media speculation, Nichole Richie has repeatedly denied she is suffering from an eating disorder and partly blamed it on her split from on-off boyfriend, Adam ‘DJ AM’ Goldstein. She has however publicly admitted to dramatic weight loss. She recently acknowledged in a Vanity Fair interview that she was too thin, “I know I’m too thin right now, so I wouldn’t want any young girl looking at me and saying, ‘That’s what I want to look like,’ ”
“I do know that they will, which is another reason I really do need to do something about it. I’m not happy with the way I look right now,” Richie added.
A source close to Nicole Richie, 25, told People magazine: “She’s tired of everyone saying you don’t eat, because she does. Yet she used to be a perfectly normal weight when she and Paris worked together initially on “The Simple Life. She wants to gain weight. It wasn’t anyone saying you have to go do this - it wasn’t an intervention. It was her saying I’m tired of people saying this about me, I’m going to go get some tests. It was a personal decision.”
Meanwhile, E!, which televises the series, added, “Nicole is an important member of the E! Networks family. We send her our very best wishes and look forward to working with her on the new season of The Simple Life.” Richie stars in the E! series The Simple Life, along with her BFF-again Paris Hilton. (E! Online is a division of E! Networks.)
The show’s producers released a statement saying “Everyone … supports Nicole and wishes her well. We consider her a part of our family and look forward to resuming production on The Simple Life when she is ready.” A spokesperson for 20th Century Fox Television said: “We wish her a speedy recovery and fully expect the series will resume production at some point, hopefully in the near future.”
