Picture of Shirin Ebadi, the Iranian Nobel Peace Prize WinnerIranian Nobel Peace Prize winner Shirin Ebadi said on Saturday nations with nuclear capabilities should spend money to stop exploitation of women instead of making bombs. Iran may be toying with the idea of acquiring a nuclear weapon, but Nobel laureate Shirin Ebadi argues that the money needed for making an atom bomb can be used better for a more pressing need - ending prostitution and sexual trafficking of women.
Ms. Ebadi, who practises law in her country Iran where she “magically” escaped two assassination attempts, is particularly critical of the U.S.-sponsored “war on terrorism” and its effect on human rights. “Violence always brings violence.” “Have we found the roots of terrorism?” she asks. “The cost of making an atom bomb should be set against the cost of rescuing and rehabilitating girls and women trapped in prostitution,” said Ebadi

For Nobel laureate Shirin Ebadi “human rights is a package….a way of seeing the world, a culture, which cannot “be imposed with cluster bombs” and brought to countries “in tanks”. Ebadi, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2003, said poverty was the main reason why women became sex workers and that no one would sell their body for the pleasure of others unless they were in dire financial need. She has a lot of good points… Its unfair how misplaced the priorities have gotten, not just in developing countries wanting nukes, but in established world powers like the US. She said that although prostitution was illegal in many countries, authorities often favoured the client rather than trying to understand the plight of the woman.
To a specific question on whether she favoured her country possessing an atomic bomb, she said, “I am not part of any government so I don’t know what goes on behind closed doors. I am part of the public so I will speak for the people and I will say no country needs an atomic bomb, neither India, nor Pakistan, nor the US, nor Iran and nor Israel.”

In an interview published on Friday in the French newspaper Les Echos, the Iranian lawyer said democracy in her country was “non-existent” under President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s government. “For the past two years, the whole world has forgotten human rights in Iran,” Ebadi, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2003, was quoted as saying. “Fearing for its own security, the international community has turned away from the problem of human rights in Iran to concentrate on the nuclear program,” she told Les Echos.
Has the Nobel Prize changed her life? “An award does not change one’s personality. It has only increased my work. I still go to court, I still cook… Of course many doors have opened in the international arena and I am able to bring my voice to a lot many people”
“But I always wish that a day would be made up of 48 hours. The reason is, I have many thoughts that I can’t find time to put down on paper.”

Amid a raging debate over western countries banning wearing of veil, Iranian Nobel Peace prize winner Shirin Ebadi today said women should be free to decide whether they want to wear it or not. “While in Islamic countries it is compulsory for women to wear the ‘hijab’ (veil), in the western countries they are being forced to take it off. But in both circumstances women are unhappy,” Ebadi, who has fought relentlessly against repression of women in her country, said here.

The 59-year-old lawyer and human rights activist - an icon for many in Iran - launched “The Place Where I Live is Called a Red Light Area” - a book that chronicles the anguish and sadness of teenagers living in Kalighat and Sonagachi - the areas infamous for prostitution in Kolkata. The book contains first person accounts of teenagers living in a place scorned by civilised society and evokes their raw feelings of rejection and daily humiliation through simple but haunting sketches.
To her a writer “does not write anything, it is the pen which does the writing.”
“I must abide by the pen and see where it takes me,” she says. Her last book titled `Iran Awakening; A Memoir of Revolution and Hope’ has been translated into 18 languages.
