Not every woman chooses to breastfeed and those who do sometimes find it’s not possible to establish feeding or to continue for as long as they’d hoped. If you’re undecided about which way to go, you may find the following useful:
1. It’s natural. Your body makes just the right milk for your baby and adjusts to suit his or her growing needs.
2. Breast milk contains antibodies to help protect baby from illnesses such as diarrhoea and gastroenteritis. The risk of eczema is also thought to be lower.
3. It’s economical. Breastfeeding will save you hundreds of dollars in formula, bottles, teats and sterilisation equipment.
4. Breast milk is easier for your baby to digest than cows’ milk or formula. It also contains less salt and phosphorus.
5. Babies who are breastfed are less likely to become overweight, reducing the risk of obesity later in life.
6. The nappies of breastfed babies are sweeter-smelling and these babies are less likely to become constipated.
7. It’s safe and convenient. Breast milk won’t go off and you don’t have to sterilise bottles and prepare and pack feeds each time you go out, or in the middle of the night.
8. Allergy to breast milk is very rare.
9. Breastfeeding will help you get back into shape faster, burning fat stores and releasing hormones which help get your uterus back to its normal size.
10. It increases IQ. Research in the US suggests the nutrients in breast milk can help boost a baby’s brain function.
