5. Make A Handbook For Residents
In a good hotel, the information folder that’s in the room is often the first thing guests look at to see what the in-house facilities are and what the local area offers. There’s no reason why apartment complexes can’t produce something similar. It’s a friendly way to communicate the bylaws, but it’s also a valuable tool in displaying the wares of the building and making everyone feel a part of the place as soon as they move in. The folder should contain all sorts of information, including moving procedures, hours for the pool and gym, rules on visitor parking, policies on keeping keys, newspaper delivery, storage, plus details of nearby takeaway services, cafes and restaurants. One building that had been the scene of bitter in-fighting between different groups on the EC produced their own handbook. Everyone was amazed at how the atmosphere improved. And the most popular section? The part that told people how to polish the stainless steel benches in their kitchen.
6. Design Your Own Website
Most decent businesses today have their own website, so why not your apartment complex? A
domain name and web space can be purchased quite cheaply and in every block there’ll be an IT enthusiast who can install a content management system and design a good web page. The advantages are many. Residents can achieve an additional sense of community through a website, with notices, minutes and newsletters posted quickly and efficiently, a contacts page containing email addresses for EC members and the building and strata managers, and links to residents’ own personal or professional sites (particularly for those who generously helped design and host the site). There are also possibilities for promoting your building to the wider community by showcasing it with photographs, newspaper clippings, any awards won and even, possibly, a virtual tour of the place. It may even have commercial possibilities too, like accepting advertising from real estate agents with properties to self within the building.
