Picture of Jessica Trisko Miss Earth 2007 image Jessica Nicole Trisko, 23, known for her intellectual prowess has been given an honour for her beauty and may have to put her PhD studies on hold to reign as “Miss Earth 2007.” Trisko, who stands 5’10″ and weighs 135 lb., was crowned by Chile’s Hil Hernandez, last year’s Miss Earth. Trisko beat several dozen women to capture the title of Miss Earth, a pageant that celebrates environmental causes and the preservation of the Earth.
But one of the Vancouver woman’s first duties will be a discussion with McGill University about how to stall her PhD studies while she completes her Miss Earth reign.

The pageant, which was aired live last Sunday night on ABS-CBN, was hosted by MTV Asia VJ Greg “Utt” Panichkul and Ms. Earth 2004 Priscilla Meirelles. The Brazilian beauty queen is currently the flame of actor John Estrada.
The host asked the ladies one by one: How would you describe the beauty of Mother Nature to a blind child? Jessica gave a poetic answer: “I would say that the beauty of Mother Nature smells as sweet as the sweetest rose, the beauty of Mother Nature feels as soft as the softest leaf, and the beauty of Mother Nature sings like the birds and the trees.”

Trisko is currently living in Montreal, researching her doctoral dissertation entitled “Blood Money: Foreign military aid and repression in Asia’s weak states” and her research grant expires in 2010. Trisko said she’s surprised that she won as she did not have a lot of pageant experience heading into the competition. She said that the ozone depletion and global warming are the most serious threats to the environment. Trisko added that she will create an educational program to teach individuals about caring for the environment.

On the one hand, she has a yearly, tax-free, $35,000 scholarship from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, for a political-science project titled “Blood Money: Foreign military aid and repression in Asia’s weak states (1995-2005).” With the title comes $20,000 (U.S.), along with a string of public-event commitments where she’ll be able to follow up on her pledge to push for more environmental education.

However, an unsuccessful run for the Miss Universe Canada contest brought her some attention and propelled her to the Miss Earth event. A friend describes Trisko, of Filipino and Russian ancestry, as unapologetic about being a scholar who takes part in beauty contests. Trisko herself notes that, among this year’s pageant hopefuls, Miss India has been accepted to medical school while Miss Venezuela is already studying dentistry.

From its humble beginnings, the Miss Earth pageant is now one of the top four beauty pageants in the world (according to GlobalBeauties.com) , the rest being the Miss Universe, Miss World, and Miss International competitions. The pageant gained worldwide attention in 2003 when the special prize of “Beauty for a Cause” was won by Ms. Earth candidate Vida Samadzai of Afghanistan, who now resides in the United States.
